Ex-Steelers QB Neil O'Donnell Exposed By His Own Teammate For Allegedly Rigging Super Bowl XXX
Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Neil O'Donnell may have very well just had a tough day at work during Super Bowl XXX. In the 1995 season, O'Donnell led Bill Cowher’s team to the big game against the Dallas Cowboys. Unfortunately for Pittsburgh, O'Donnell threw just one touchdown pass while being intercepted three times. Even decades later, fans and analysts alike have speculated that O'Donnell’s unusually poor performance, or behavior seemingly out of character, might suggest something more sinister, including rumors that he was somehow paid off to throw the game. None of that has ever been proven true.
During that 1995 season, O'Donnell had thrown 17 touchdown passes against only seven interceptions. He was by no means a perfect quarterback, but he was generally reliable in protecting the football. That is why his three interceptions in the Super Bowl, two of which were picked off by Cowboys defensive back Larry Brown, raised so many eyebrows. The mistakes occurred at critical moments, directly swinging momentum in Dallas’ favor and contributing significantly to Pittsburgh’s defeat.

Accusing a former teammate of rigging a Super Bowl is an extraordinary claim, yet that is precisely what former Steelers guard Emerson Martin alleged while speaking on Million Dollar Minute with Neil Haley. Martin’s comments reignited debates among fans who still wonder if O'Donnell’s performance was merely an off day or something far more controversial. Regardless of the truth, the memory of Super Bowl XXX remains a defining and painful moment in Steelers history.
"Yes, so listen, nothing against Neil O'Donnell, but I do believe he threw that Super Bowl," Martin said while speaking on the show. "Neil threw two perfect passes in that game. Go back and watch the game. We had a receiver named Corey Holliday running down the sideline with his hands up and almost like [Larry] Brown was checking down in the slot and Neil's perfect two passes went to Brown."
"We had held Emmitt Smith to under 50 yards for the game," Martin said. "He had one long run for 36 yards. So he had one run for 36 yards and he was under 50 yards for the game. If you take those two plays away where Brown returned those two interceptions inside the 10-yard line, that is two touchdowns that they converted in that game and they would have been totally dominated by us and we would be talking about a different story... we should have won that game. We were the better team that day. We played better with the exception of two plays."

Well they certainly weren't the better team for a good chunk of the first half allowing Dallas to take a 13-0 and having to play catch-up. He is right that the defense had Dallas stymied in the second half, and if not for those INTs, it would have been a different result.

I remember Andre Hastings with a clean drop to play directly proceeding the final pick given the Steelers, a second and two or possibly a first down instead of a second and 10. I also remember Corey Holliday running free. I write it off to nothing more than O'Donnell fucking up and then I remember losing him in free agency to the Jets mad dog Russo casting doubt on O'Donnell's decision saying."O'Donnell can drive a Cadillac meeting the Steelers, but he can't drive a Chevy the jets." That decision by O'Donnell relegated himself to being a back up for the of his career something which he seemed OK with.

They got punched in the mouth HARD in that first quarter. I was worried they were going to get destroyed. Otherwise, they pretty much owned the next 3 quarters save those Neil O picks.
I was absolutely certain they were going to score a TD that last drive. Was worried they might score too quickly.
5-wide was unstoppable all year. Except for those 2 frickin' picks.

Yet, like freaking Tomlin, who followed him, cowhercdecided to basically ease into that game didn't come out in the five widesccame out giving the ball to Eric Pegrum

The 5-wide was never their "base" offense, and likely couldn't or shouldn't have been. Unbelievably hard to stop, but also high risk (as demonstrated with the 2 picks).
Not sure Cowher "easing in" had much to do with Lloyd's knees buckling and getting steamrolled a few times in Q1.

Reading this and wondering if I should feel like a bad fan for never having heard of Emerson Martin, so Wikipedia says he was waived in October, 1995. Did they pick him back up later in the season, or did he have the same view of the Super Bowl as the rest of the nation?

Actually it would make more sense if he played well for a big contract.
Walker of the Seahawks will make a lot more money after that SB than before.
Also look at the stupid contract Larry Brown got from the Raiders.
I think more obvious and correct explanation is that those passes were the result of Deion Sanders and some bad route running.
Usually when a pass goes right to a CB when the QB is not pressured, the WR ran the wrong route on a timing pattern and this happened to Peyton in the SB as well.

May have had something to do with 0 points until just before halftime

Maybe you would have preferred 2 more picks in the first half.
5-wide was something of a gimmick. They used it like most teams use no-huddle today, and with few exceptions no-huddle or hurry-up isn't anyone's base offense.
BTW, facing a team that won 2 of the last 3 SBs with a slew of HOFers is exactly when the younger, inexperienced team might "ease-in" because of nerves and the moment. But with Tomlin, he had the Cowboys and chose to ease-in....

No, I would have preferred more points in the first half. I would have preferred something more productive than Eric pegram, 6 carries for 15 yards, longest run 4 yards.

Why run the 5-wide without Kordell Stewart on the field? Kordell was part of a ton of big plays for them and they sidelined him in that game.

Maybe, but if he was made an offer he couldn't refuse...
Are we saying it's totally impossible that an NFL player in a position to affect the outcome of a game would never do that?
In October 2025, a major federal investigation uncovered illegal gambling schemes involving NBA players and coaches using inside information to manipulate player prop bets. Arrests included Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and former coach Damon Jones, leading to intense scrutiny of betting on individual performance and prompting tighter league regulations.

But that's a different motive.
And it would have to be a hell of a lot of money since a great performance or even a winning performance would have been worth tens of millions even back then.
And we have no proof he was linked to gamblers. You can't say because some NBA players did it in 2025 O'Donnell did it in 1996. Not every dumb fuck play is throwing the game.
Again, if we are going to accuse everyone including Payton Manning who throws a pick six in the Superbowl of a crime, then you have to have solid proof.

The whole limo part of the story is something I had not heard before.
Claim is that he didn't fly back with team. Got into a limo with his agent and then went to the Jets so a lot of guys never spoke to him again.

Oh I don’t think it’s totally impossible. Just that it doesn’t make a lot of sense.
I mean, we were HUGE underdogs. Who pays off the QB of the heavy underdog to throw the game?
Would make more sense to pay off the other QB then wager heavy on the underdog.

Where does the mob make their money here?
So they pay off the QB of the heavy underdog just so their local team will sign him to a contract?
Make this make sense.
I’d like to think he threw the game too. More realistic is that he wasn’t on same page with receiver.

DAL favored by 13.5, won by 10.....If Neil was paid off, he failed to deliver and would have been iced in short order

well he would have been except he used a kitana sword to save the head of the mafia from a couple of sick sodomizing hillbillies in a gun store.
but he lost his LA privileges
all of that is as likely as him throwing the game

Fuck NOD. That was the first year my father got me into Steelers football. Devastating. At least we had some glory days before Art 2 took over.
