The money
The outrageous salaries, to me, or my major turn off as an NFL fan. Illustrating this yesterday was the plight of poor Daniel Jones. Poor guy as portrayed by the analysts because of his injury he's only gonna be able to make 30 some million next year… It's really too bad according to the analyst that he's going to be so underpaid. What the actual fuck!! Daniel fucking Jones 30 some million??

And I'm more talking about this presentation of… Poor guy, is only gonna get paid 30 some million
My favorite last year was Cam saying "I've got to feed my family" during his minor contract impasse.swissvale72 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2026 2:23 pmNo...just talking about it now.TimmayLake wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2026 2:22 pmYou're just noticing this now after watching pro sports for 40+ years?

Football really escalated in just the last few years. Non-QBs getting $40M+ per year?!?TimmayLake wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2026 2:22 pmYou're just noticing this now after watching pro sports for 40+ years?
But is it any less outrageous than the salaries singers and actors get? But I guess when not "underpaying" employees (because you don't have any) you get a pass.
Really it's pretty insane to drop $300 on Sunday Ticket. But it's even more insane what it costs a family of 4 to go to a sporting event. Not just talking about the NFL or even sports - when you have all these alternative entertainment options, the competition is supposed to LOWER prices. But maybe that's really just an indicator of over-consumption or lazy consumption. Probably not sustainable - you aren't making less money, you're just wasting your money on a lot more (like, do you really need to pay for 5 streaming services?).
And the NIL money in college is already ruining it. You have players who have transferred 3-4 times. LMFAO "student athlete". WHAT ARE WE DOING?!??
I watched a video this morning and they were talking about senior nights for college basketball teams. They said of the high major (65-70) teams around the country, there were only 22 players that played their entire college career at one school. In the SEC, only one player did that. That’s crazy!.Kodiak wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2026 5:58 pmFootball really escalated in just the last few years. Don't forget 26 year old quarterbacks filing lawsuits against the NCAA so they can play at 27...

I don't begrudge anyone there money . . . unless they stole it
I am cheering on long snappers and their attempt to make serious money with lifetime pensions by snapping a football without error for 6 straight years. I mean, 2 bad snaps and your gravy train could be terminated . . .

Who remembers when Millhunks were cursing out MLB pitchers Hunter and Messersmith when they got 1 million?
I can't even comprehend contracts like Soto that are worth more than most franchises 25 years ago.
Ultimately fans are stupid for buying tickets.
Sports made the decision around the same time Disneyland did. Fuck the middle class, the easy money is the sucker lawyer couple and their one kid who don't care about blowing 10K for a week.
BTW its cheaper to go to Japan and visit DisneySea for a week than to go to either DisneyWorld or Disneyland if you don't live in FL or CA.

The players deserve everything they're getting and more. No one cries about the fucking billions the owners are racking in. Quit being a simp for corporations.

No complaints about the players making millions or owners hundreds times more. Capitalism.

All these assholes in all professional sports should contribute $100 apiece to Curt Flood’s heirs

I don't know why you thought I wasn't blaming the owners. I clearly stated that they were not interested in average fans and only in big spenders. I don't blame the players for getting that money but the monopolist owners for creating this mess.

How about $44M per yr? Mr. Jones is getting $88M on a new 2 yr Colts deal.swissvale72 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2026 1:38 pmThe outrageous salaries, to me, or my major turn off as an NFL fan. I'm amazed that the Falcons signed Tua. I know that Miami is still paying for most of it but what does he bring that Skylar Thompson doesn't?

I just think the owners and players have decided a game is a "destination experience".
Sure, capitalism, but it's a small fortune to have season tickets for a family of four, to baseball or basketball (and other sports). No better illustration than the NFL international games - literally taking away a home game from the actual local fan base so you can, presumably, gouge international customers who are just there to experience a game (like the SB became a long time ago).
Even being able to watch the local team on TV has been chipped away at with exclusive streaming packages.
The downside to all this - which I think we are all painfully aware - is the product suffers/changes when the revenue model changes. You're exchanging a stable fan base for a very transient one - if your model isn't built around repeat business, then the quality tends to be inferior. So you have the casual observer who's like "wow, what did you think of that call?" vs. the diehard fan who wants to kill Goodell and all the refs.
Inevitably it becomes harder and harder to entertain and get the attention of those transient/casual fans. Which leads you down the WWE path....

I've asked this question to my friends: at what point does the NFL eventually end up killing the golden goose?.Kodiak wrote: ↑Fri Mar 13, 2026 5:23 pmI just think the owners and players have decided a game is a "destination experience".
