Improvement in goaltending is one of the biggest differences. Also, they aren't top to bottom the weakest, slowest team in the league, so there's that.
Oh how I wish Geno had wingers of this quality back when he skated like the wind. He's still had a great start to the season but they'd be tearing up the league if he had the wheels he had 10 years ago.

Whole team has so much more energy. It’s obvious on every shift.
I don’t expect them to compete this year by any means. The young guys will hit a wall and/or get sent back down the AHL. Other guys will cool off as well. The goaltending may go down the shutter again. The luster will come off.
But I think this start shows a little of what I said last season about disagreeing with the notion that the Pens can’t compete with all 3 of the stars on the roster. I said then and I’ll say it now, but now with at least a little bit of evidence, that it is possible. They just can’t be the ones being counted on every game to generate the spark. They need to be surrounded by skilled players who are smart and can create some space.
Malkin is a great example of that. He isn’t trying to skate through 3 defenders like was in previous years. He’s finally able to count on his linemates to do some things that allow him to play a more positional role that fits his age better.
Same with Sid.
They’re not superstars anymore, but they can still be really good role players.
