Pens/NHL offseason thread

Post by Legacy User » Wed Jul 09, 2014 1:56 pm

Now, where were we?

There's been an argument circulating around the various Pens-related interwebs that one benefit of Neal being gone is that Geno will no longer "defer" to him. Personally, i've not really had much of an opinion on that but I came across the piece that tackles the issue with some data from over the years.

http://www.pensburgh.com/2014/7/7/58714 ... er-to-neal

On another note, JR has told people that he thinks there's a shot Kapanen could make the team this year. Personally, I think he's crazy. The kid's only like 180 pounds. He's got to fill out some first before being thrown to the sharks.

Article proves a lot of people wrong, those 2 really fed off of each other, hopefully Geno can find chemistry like that with his new linemates whoever they may be

Kane and Toews just re-upped with Chicago. 10.5 mil cap hits each. That supporting cast is going to be steadily going bye bye.

Welp. We'll see what the Blackhawks do now. They win again there's yet another excuse you can take away from the Penguins.

In their favor they've got a really highly regarded prospect system, ranked #4 on Hockeys Future. If it pans out they'll probably be ok. The Pens, on the other hand, have a prospect system rated #17. Although it doesn't appear these rankings have been updated since before the Draft. We'll see how it all pans out.

Pens hire new assistant coach, Gary Agnew. Most recently with the Blues as an assistant.

Megna with the one year deal:
http://penguins.nhl.com/?navid=nav-teamnav-pit

While not earth shattering he offers depth and speed. I liked how he started but it was hard to tell if he fell out of favor with Bylsma or injuries kept him back after the good start.

Samuelson re-upped as well.

I want to hear good news about Sutter/Spaling.

I figured the boards went down because they couldn't stand Beth's extreme "butthurt" over Giroux.

I know of a guy that can easily take away butthurt. He has magical hands.

Not Pens related per se, but.......might anybody be up for a straight up "authentic for authentic" trade? I have an authentic Reebok Polamalu home jersey in size 48 and i'd like to trade it for an authentic Pens jersey (nothing larger than size 52). Don't worry, it's NOT a knock off. I'm open with regard to the era, but i'm not really interested in any of the 3rd jerseys. The Troy jersey is in very good condition, has been worn a number of times but well taken care of. If interested i'll send plenty of pics beforehand. As for the Pens jersey, it doesn't have to have player name or number and if it does i'm not particularly concerned with which one it does have as I can always have that re-done.

As i've said a number of times on this board, i've largely moved away from the NFL and have donated most of my Steelers gear at this point. But i'm not going to just give away a jersey I paid so much cash for.

David Booth and Dustin Penner are still available. Not sure what they're asking for but could be useful players in the right roles.

Jacques Martin now "senior advisor of hockey operations" in the pens org.

The 61-year-old's duties will include scouting at the NHL level and assessing how the Penguins compare to the competition, according to a Penguins' news release.

Spaling looking for 2.85 in arbitration. Pens offer 1.65. We have a bit over 6.4 in cap space.

I think the Pens offer is about right. No way Spaling IMO should be near the 3 mil mark based on what he's done.

http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2014 ... 5-million/

Update: Spaling signed. 2 years at 2.2 mil per. I can live with it. Now we just gotta get Sutter done and we'll be all set to start the season.

I dont have a problem with Spalings contract, its a little more than we wanted to pay him but less than what he originally wanted. He had decent production on a team that was offensively challenged, I'm hoping he'll be even better here

The arbitrator just basically split the difference with Spaling. If we get the same result with Sutter, we're good. If the arbitrator looks more at numbers overall than, for instance, 2014 playoff numbers, Sutter could end up getting a ruling more Pens friendly than Spaling got.

Not that I was a huge Stempniak fan, but it seemed odd we couldn't/didn't offer 1M or less for a versatile player

Letting both Spaling and Sutter go to arbitration handcuffed them a little bit. They honestly don't know if they're going to have any cap space yet. Which is where I sort of disagree with Rutherford's assertion after the Neal trade that it freed up cap space.

It was very negligible, I think we came out 250K ahead

I still think we'll move Sutter, Martin or Scuds, if we can, because after Sutter's contract(assuming he'll get 3.5/yr) we wont have much cap space left

The uncertainty of arbitration possibly on Spaling (though narrowly avoided), coupled with limited cap space, hampered the team's ability to sign a guy like Stempniak for more top 9 depth.

I hope Sutter gets/takes 3.5. I would keep him at that number, it would be good value for what he brings to the table.

I would be surprised to see another major roster move this offseason. Actually, I'd be surprised to see one until Maata and Bennett (to a lesser extent) have returned to the lineup.

I could see parting with Martin at the deadline, depending on injuries, etc.

And all of the sudden Letang's contract looks like something of a bargain. PK Subban signed today for 8 years at NINE MIL per year cap hit. I never thought he'd get that much. I was thinking 7.5-8 or something.

Sutter re - signed, two years, 3.3 million per. Fair deal for both sides, pretty much best case scenario.

Agreed. And that should conclude the offseason most likely and set us up going into the next season. I feel pretty good about the way things transpired in the end. I like not only the depth but the potential quality of the depth as well.

The cap hit is fine, we couldnt have gone much higher due to the cap.

The deal is only 2 years though and Sutter will be a UFA at that point, and without checking I think our whole bottom six are signed for 2 years or less.

The other problem is when Maata comes off of LTIR, we're going to be up against it, and of we have an injury while Maata is still out we wont have many options. I think a move is forthcoming still

One more thing about Sutter, I think he's going to have a good season, now that he doesnt have Glass or Adams dragging him down he might flourish with some actual NHL caliber line mates.
