Pens vs Flyers (4/15/21)
Pens vs Flyers (4/15/21)
It's been a few days, and I'm itching to start a Pens' thread. In case you missed it, the Pens all got the J&J vaccine on Monday just before it got yanked.
Onto the game.....here were the lines at practice yesterday:
Guentzel-Crosby-Rust
McCann-Carter-Zucker
ZAR-Blueger-Rodrigues
Zohorna-Jankowski-Sceviour
Dumoulin-Letang
Matheson-Ceci
Pettersson-Marino
Looks like the question on whether Carter is a C or LW has been answered (for now). It'll be interesting to see where Zucker plays if/when Malkin and Kap are back. Honestly, this looks like a great set up to me:
Guentzel - Crosby - Rust
McCann - Malkin - Kapanen
Zucker - Carter - Rodrigues
ZAR - Blueger - Tanev
As for Philly - this will be their 7th game in 11 days. They lost to Buffalo on Sunday, and were trounced by Washington on Tuesday. The Pens are coming off of a 3 day break.
Honestly, a win here could be the nail in the coffin on the Flyers season. A loss today would put them 14 points behind the Pens with 13 games to play. It would also put them 6 or 8 points behind Boston, who has 2 games in hand....and 5 games remaining vs Buffalo.
Sounds like Jarry and Hart will start in net.

The Jeff Carter mystery, sure to play out in many ways.
I figured him for wing since that is where he has been for the past few years. If they were going to try him at C maybe in the bottom six but being on the second line doesn't mean he will play 18-20 minutes.
It also makes me wonder how seriously Malkin is hurt. All I have heard is that he hit up the ice over the weekend, nothing else. It will be interesting to see if AT&T Pitt gives us an update tonight on his status.
Word came out, from Hextall that he had been working on some kind of deal for Carter for nearly a month before the deal happened. You can look at that many ways.
McCann has played well at C for a while now so moving him to wing is curious.
Here are some Sully quotes(from Pensburgh) about Carter at C:
“There’s a number of reasons why we’ve chosen to start the way we have,” Sullivan said after practice today. “But having said that, this is going to be a little bit of an exploration process to figure out what we think are the best combinations and where people fit to make us the most competitive.”
About Zucker and moving him:
“We think Zuck has the ability to play both sides. In a lot of ways, there’s an advantage in today’s game to playing on the offside on the wing, especially with how hard teams pinch the walls coming out of your end.”

I agree. It would be nice if all of those players were available during the last week or so and into the playoffs, but playing teams like the Caps and Bruins it always seems that they end up inuring one or more of our players.
One can hope though.

That's a tough scratch for Gaudreau and Zohorna.

Nice to see the Pens attacking in the early 2nd period. And just as I am typing this Sid rings the bell after getting a stick passed to him while trailing the play.

The equipment man with an assist!
Crosby gave his stick to Dumo in the DZ then broke up ice and Tags reached over the bench to get Crosby a stick and 87 knocked it past Hart.
You rarely see that.
Carter has looked good.

The stick getting passed and used to score a goal like 3 seconds later was pretty amazing.fractalsteel wrote: ↑Fri Apr 16, 2021 12:18 amThe equipment man with an assist!

Carter has looked good. Very good. The announcer said tonight is the 4th game this season he has played in front of a crowd. That is crazy.

Might have been the worst officiated game the zones have played in this year.
Also, giving the entire team the vaccine at the same time was a recipe for a slow start.

Well.....in other news, the Caps and Islanders both got stomped last night.

The Flyers came to play and when there were breakdowns, and there were, Hart was there with many great saves.
I thought the Birdies were very choppy last night and maybe having three days off caused that. Still, I'm happy to gain on the teams on top and get a point in a game they could have easily lost.

With the home vs away record this year getting the top spot may be a huge deal for the Pens this season in the playoffs. Also I think once they get out of the divisional match-ups in the playoffs we will see some wild games due to lack of teams playing each other and seeing how different styles match up with schemes and systems.
The home vs. away is interesting, but I think matchups tell the larger story: The Pens are 2-2 @ both NY teams, and 1-1 @ Wash. They're a combined 1-5 at Boston and Philly. The good news is that they are not likely to be the lower seed in a series vs either of them.stillthere wrote: ↑Fri Apr 16, 2021 4:50 pmWith the home vs away record this year getting the top spot may be a huge deal for the Pens this season in the playoffs. I couldn't agree more with the division comment. ESPECIALLY when looking at teams in the North & Central.

Are you specifically thinking of the high stick on Rodrigues?bradshaw2ben wrote: ↑Fri Apr 16, 2021 6:42 pmbradshaw2ben wrote: ↑Fri Apr 16, 2021 11:02 amMight have been the worst officiated game the Pens have played in this year.

Speaking of the playoffs...if you make it you could possibly face two opponents from your division for up to 7 games each, if you are lucky. Talk about familiarity.
The division finals could be very spicy.
Then they reseed the whole thing and it is possible that East doesn't not meet West in the finals.

Not that I want this, but a Boston vs. Montreal Stanley Cup final is possiblefractalsteel wrote: ↑Fri Apr 16, 2021 10:11 pmSpeaking of the playoffs...if you make it you could possibly face two opponents from your division for up to 7 games each, if you are lucky. Talk about familiarity.

Nice to see the NYI lose last night, albeit to the Bruins. Now we need the Caps to lose @ Philly (somewhat of a tough ask) and we need to handle our business in BUF today.
