Pens vs Sabres (5/8/21)

Post by Pabst » Sat May 08, 2021 6:12 pm

Regular season finale.

Lagace starts in net.

The Pens are guaranteed the #2 spot with a win tonight. They will be guaranteed the division with a win AND a Caps loss.

Buffalo looks quick on their feet today. I would like for the Pens to go ahead and open the floodgates like they did in the game on Thursday and make this a very relaxed enjoyable game to watch.

Lagace is earning his paycheck today. He has had some point blank stops and breakaways.

Welcome to the big league.

Legace has been a revelation so far. I'm more impressed with his saves going side to side. He really can stretch out quickly to cover the end of the net.

I don't know why the Pens can't get any extended OZ time. It seems like when they get the puck deep they are peeling off hoping to clog the middle of the ice instead of making it hard the Sabres D men.

They have to get Zucker off the second line. He is killing the 42-71 dynamic.

Malkin is shaping back but his passing is still off but he has been very strong defensively. Saved one goal and maybe a second with stellar back checking.

Might the team be playing conservative to make sure they don't expose Legace?

Maybe Sully put him in there so the team would have to be more mentally sound in the game since physically they have been playing fine for the last 2 months even with all the games missed by players due to injury.

Again, I don't know shit about hockey, and probably shouldn't post, but Lagace seems to have quick feet and decent reaction time/ knows where the puck is/ covers open lanes. /shrug
Arguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon. No matter how good you are, the pigeon is going to shit on the board and strut around like it won anyway.

I am with you. He has been very impressive and I am glad. Now we know we have another player if needed down the line.

OK, slight correction to something I said earlier: The Caps need to win their last 2 in regulation in order to pass the Pens. So long as either of their next 2 games go into OT, the Pens get 1st place.

For tonight only.....Go Flyers

I was happy to see Boston lose but a win for them would have been better for us because of the pressure on the Caps not only to catch us but to stay ahead of the Bruins.

Speaking of guys showing up out of the blue look at Legace but more importantly Gaudreau. The talent level in the NHL is insane and guys like Legace and Gaudreau were both on the outside looking in not too long ago. Gaudreau certainly has made the most of his second chance and I'll wager he remains in the NHL, if not with the Pens another team next season.
We might look back at this game down the road and see how important it really was and that a guy that hadn't won a game in goal in almost 4 years came through for the Pens when it was needed.

Wilson on the bench to start the second period.

He sure acted like he injured badly.
