Nice day in seattle today. I don’t think it went over 70 degrees.

Roster looks meh. I hope these folks aren’t looking for a VGK reincarnate.

I don't get the Pettersson hate from Pens fans either. He's an effective defensive defenseman, a proven top-4 guy, and he's only 25 years old. No, his contract isn't a bargain, but he's fine.

He was, statistically, the best defender on the team last year:
Jesse Marshall
@jmarshfof
Marcus Pettersson finishes the regular season with the highest expected-goals for share on the Penguins despite getting dragged on social media most nights. Also had the lowest 5v5 xGA/60 of any defenseman on the team.

Maybe Marcus Pettersson is pretty good defensively.
https://twitter.com/jmarshfof/status/13 ... 9313480712
Analytics are fine and all, but he just doesn't pass my eye test. He's a guy who gets easy competition and doesn't do anything particularly well. Again not a horrible trait for a Dman, but if you're paid $4M you should bring something to the table. I feel like Ruh/Rikko could have done equally as well at a fraction of the hit.

I predict Petts will be traded fairly soon

A bit off topic but I was thinking about the 1967 NHL expansion draft and did some digging.
6 teams at once is ambitious and they pulled it off.
Here is a link from wiki(I know, I know) and it shows the draft and how a few teams were ahead of the curve, namely the Flyers.

Flyers were well ahead of the league in many regards. Fred Shero was implementing systems and watching film of opponents before it became that widespread. I mean to be an expansion team back then and win the couple in that short amount of time is pretty fucking impressive.

Too bad they'll never come close again with the clowns running that team

As long as we're shitting on Philly: Think they want a do-over of the 2017 draft? Yikes.

1 Nico Hischier (C) New Jersey Devils
2 Nolan Patrick (C) Philadelphia Flyers
3 Miro Heiskanen (D) Dallas Stars
4 Cale Makar (D) Colorado Avalanche
5 Elias Pettersson (C) Vancouver Canucks

The leftovers from an expansion draft shouldn't form a better team but:
Bailey Domi Tarasenko
Dadonov Kerfoot Voracek
Vatrano Eakin Compher
Cousins Grant Dowd
Pettersson DeMelo
Zadorov Stecher
Bean Foote
Price
Extra: Clague, Kylington, Simek, Clifton, Kahkonen.

Added thought - the Caps have $9.7m in cap space....but zero goalies under contract and no Ovechkin. Seattle did us a huge favor by not taking one of their (many) expensive contracts. We'll see if they can move Kuznetsov, but given his contract and off-ice issues, that may be a tough sell.

Added bonus - Philly just sent Ghost, a 2022 2nd and 7th rounder to Arizona for....nothing.

Donnie - my issue with that draft roster is that it leaves Seattle no room to maneuver. At this point, they can still accumulate assets from cap-strapped teams (like Washington) and/or sign some big name FAs.

Yea I recognize this roster isn't "final" and word on the street is that Sea is going to start receiving some assets for not picking certain players. But you still need some top end talent. And their current team is full of Goalie's and Dmen. Who is going to score?

Off the top of my head - Tarasenko and Kuznetsov are both on the trading block. Landeskog is still out there, as is Taylor Hall, Mike Hoffman, and I'm sure a few others.

Calling my shot now - NY has completely fucked up their rebuild and they won't be a serious contender for a while.

6 years to Goodrow?

The term on the contracts they gave to Trouba, Kreider, and Goodrow are going to cripple them. Zibanejad is a UFA after this year. And best of luck extending Adam Fox after the contract Miro Heiskanen just got.

What a horrific contract by NYR. I thought they were on the right track and boom...fucked it all up.

I'm calling Eichel to Seattle now :)

Interestingly, his NTC doesn't kick in until July next year.

Going out on a limb here, but I think he'd be willing to waive that.

Oh, I'm aware but all GMs have some serious misses. Glad Hextall's biggest miss happened in 2017 :D

Yup- he'd probably go to Siberia at this point

Maybe, but leverage is a big weapon to have when you can stick it to your team on the way out. Maybe he would like to stay in the East or the Atlantic so that he has more chances to stick it to his old team.

Think about this, when they lost the McDavid sweeps they apologized to the fanbase for losing out on him. I wonder what Eichel thought about that.

FS- maybe. I just think both Buff and Eichel want a fresh start and they'll come to an agreement quickly.

Sea makes too much sense- they've got a bunch of players/picks and no cap concerns to land him.

Philly just gave up the 14th overall pick, a 2023 second rounder, and Rober Hagg for *squints* Rasmus Ristolainen.

Excuse me......

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To recap, Philly has given up the following:
- 2021 1st Round Pick
- 2022 2nd Round Pick
- 2022 7th Round Pick
- 2023 2nd Round Pick
- Robert Hagg

All to basically swap Gostisbehere for Ristolainen. Ristolainen is quite a bit bigger and a better puck mover than Ghost, but the guy is every bit the defensive liability. That is a crazy price they paid to get him.

It got worse. They flipped voracek back to Columbus for Atkinson

Fletcher is awful. He destroyed the Wild. He’s just about killed Philly with those moves after getting Ellis

Simply atrocious

I suppose Phily is chalking up Risto's issues to the overall problems in Buffalo, and maybe pairing him with Provorov is what he needs to finally take that next step? I don't know....still seems like a ton to give up for a flawed player with only one year left on his deal.

In other Metro Division news, sounds like Ovechkin will sign for $10m/year (hearing 3 or 4 year term). Washington will be over the Cap with no goalies under contract. That means they 100% must trade Kuznetsov at this point, but it doesn't sound like anyone wants him (at least at the price the Caps are asking). The coke-loving bird man has a huge cap hit and a NTC....best of luck! :D

I honestly wasn't aware of this. Yikes.

I really do feel bad for Eichel. Compare him with any other top 5 draft pick over the last decade and he holds up really well. Unfortunately for him, he came out at the same time as Conor McDavid and the team that took him is a total clusterfuck. Hopefully he ends up somewhere out West and starts lighting it up.

I'm seeing 4 years for 10 million a season for Ovie and that contract scares me. It might be the template for Malkin's extension.

I don't want to see the Pens give him 4 years or 10 million a year though he deserves it for what he has meant for this team.

Hard pass on that kind of contract for Geno. Sorry, but if he wants that kind of money, then good riddance and I wish him the best. Signing a player at his age and injury history for that kind of $ is a death sentence.

Caps just traded Brenden Dillon to the Jets for a pair of 2nd round picks. That should free up enough space for them to get Ovie & Samsonov. It also weakens their already weak defense. They're banking on Kempny fully recovering which is a bit risky, to say the least.
