Pens vs Flames (11/23/22)
Pens vs Flames (11/23/22)
Getting this up a day early since I might not have time to do so tomorrow. I haven't done a deep-dive analytics piece in a while, so let's go!
The Flames are a team that, on the surface, should be pretty good. They are a top 5 possession team (#4 in both Corsi and Fenwick) at 5 on 5. Special teams are average - middle of the pack in both PP and PK. So why are they only clinging on to the final WC spot out west? Two reasons:
1. Goaltending. Jacob Markstrom had a career season last year and he's come back down to earth. At the moment, he's allowing just over 3 goals/game and is sporting a lousy .889 save %.
2. Those top 5 possession metrics I mentioned earlier? Great example of quantity over quality. Yes, the Flames are third in the NHL for shots/game.....but they are 21st in Scoring Chances and 18th in High Danger chances. This is a team that's content to throw pucks at the net and hope for the best.
Some other good news (at least on paper) - This will be game #4 of a six game road trip for Calgary. They were in Florida last weekend (where they went 1-1) and they beat Philly on Monday. Hopefully they're dragging a bit on Thursday night.
I'll try to post lines tomorrow.

Nice little road win streak for the Birdies. They got really good Center play with Crosby being player of the week, Malkin being a stud in the 200 foot game and Carter and Blueger solid up and down the ice.
Team defense is still a bit of a concern but there hasn't been much issue with putting the puck in the net.
Still waiting for Rush to go on a streak.

Adam Ruzicka - Elias Lindholm - Tyler Toffoli
Dillon Dube - Nazem Kadri - Andrew Mangiapane
Jonathan Huberdeau - Mikael Backlund - Blake Coleman
Milan Lucic - Kevin Rooney - Trevor Lewis
Noah Hanifin / Rasmus Andersson
Nikita Zadorov / MacKenzie Weegar
Dennis Gilbert / Chris Tanev
Daniel Vladar
^ Pensinsidescoop is saying Vladar was the first goalie off the ice following Calgary's morning skate, indicating he'll be the starter. I was surprised until I saw that Markstrom has started 15/18 games thus far for the flames....that's an unsustainable pace. Jarry is in net for the Pens.
Jake Guentzel - Sidney Crosby - Rickard Rakell
Jason Zucker - Evgeni Malkin - Bryan Rust
Brock McGinn - Jeff Carter - Danton Heinen
Ryan Poehling - Teddy Blueger - Josh Archibald
Marcus Pettersson / Kris Letang
P.O. Joseph / Jeff Petry
Brian Dumoulin / Jan Rutta

Might see a regrouped top power play unit.

I tuned in for the power play at the end of the period and it looked like there were indeed 2 defensemen out there.fractalsteel wrote: ↑Wed Nov 23, 2022 11:45 pmMight see a regrouped top power play unit.

On another note, we had a nice 3 month streak going, but the boys are sick again. Going to be an early night for me.

Vladar has been good but a little lucky.
Jarry is very focused and his positioning has been solid.
