Pens vs Red Wings (4/11/24)

Post by Pabst » Thu Apr 11, 2024 5:18 pm

The Pens and Red Wings are currently tied in the standings (Pens hold the tiebreaker) and both are 1 behind Washington and 3 back of NYI.
A loss tonight plus an Islanders and Capitals win effectively eliminates the Penguins from the post season.

This is a must win game. Period.

Here are the other games of note:
- Capitals at Buffalo (Go Sabres)
- Flyers at Rangers (Go Rags)
- Canadians at NY Islanders (Go Habs)

Letang getting cute in his own end. Caught on a long shift no one covered the net.
1-1

Yup

At least DOC battled on the play until the end. Top line on the ice for both Wings goals.

Refs need to take control of this game. That Letang scuffle should never have gone on without a call.

I apologize for all the things I’ve said about Jeff Carter these past few years.

Well, most of them.

Ok, some of them.

Another goal surrendered by the top line.
I don't give a fuck how they drive play, they have been terrible in the most important part of the ic3

I can’t even believe I’m saying this right now, but we’re officially in the driver’s seat for that last playoff spot.

I swear Erik Karlsson is going to be the death of me. On the PP, looked right at Malkin who was poised to take a wide open one-timer… shot the puck himself multiple times, instead. Then I absolutely can’t believe he pinched, up a goal with 4min left. And I was still pissed about giving DET the point… then he buries that game-winner.

I guess that’s Karlsson in a nutshell.

FWIW, Pens will likely need a win in the finale against the Isles to make playoffs. Isles, on the other hand, may well have already clinched a playoff spot. Works to Pens advantage??

Pens def clinch with two wins and OT loss.

Pens & isles might very well be playing for 3rd in division.

Hopefully....Pens need to gain a point over the next two games....Isles in MSG vs. Rangers tomorrow.

Isles at NYR
Philly is home to NJ
Caps home to Tampa
Detroit is at Toronto

Everyone losing is obviously the ideal, but....To me, the biggest games are NYI and Detroit. The Pens need the Isles to drop points, and Detroit finishes with a back to back vs Montreal (who ain't good).

Washington losing would be great, but they still play Boston and Philly to finish out the season.
Philly only has 2 games remaining. Even if they win out, the Pens would need to drop 2 games to fall below them.

One other thing - Root for Nashville this weekend. If they win their next 2 (against Chicago and Columbus) and Vegas loses to either Minnesota or Colorado then the Preds are locked into the #1 WC out west.....making their tilt with the Pens meaningless.

I’m torn with the islanders. On one hand, if they lose then there is more opportunities for the Pens to get in. On the other hand, would be great if they had nothing to play for game 82 if we need to win to get in.

I hope the Wings and Caps drop the next game and Pittsburgh wins. Makes it pretty easy at that point.

Better tighten up the defensive game.
Last night the Pens got sucked into the kind of game Detroit wants to play. Luckily it didn't come back to bit them in the ass but against a team like Boston(tomorrow) if they are loose in their DZ it will get ugly.
Top line was on the ice for 4 of 5 of Detroit's scores. If that doesn't bother you then I don't know what to say.

I'd like to watch the Isle/ Rags game tomorrow, there is a lot of bad blood going back to the game earlier in the week. Patrick Roy is a funny guy if not a bit weird.

Good point with NY.

On that last sentence....yep! In that scenario, the Pens would only need 1 point to eliminate both teams. Assuming it's not a SO, same would apply to Philly.
