Final Mock
Final Mock
Getting near to the real deal, so here's a final mock I wouldn't mind seeing... kind of a mix of guys I like and guys I think the Steelers would go for.
Steelers trade the #24 overall to Carolina for their second and third round picks
2.39: Baron Browning, LB, Ohio State - Sudden, fluid athlete, and good length with natural cover skills. A little rough around the edges, especially in getting lost tracking the RB and not maintaining his gap/being aware of what's going on around him, but dig his versatility.
2.55: Landon Dickerson, C, Alabama - He slides due to his huge medical red flags, and while he's not a perfect fit, I think the Steelers will love his intangibles and leadership abilities. For better or worse, Pouncey was a leader in the locker room and there's a void with him gone. Dickerson has a background in taekwondo and we need some ass-kickers.
3.73: Trey Sermon, RB, Ohio State - Really came on in the second half of the season for the Buckeyes, and seems like a guy the Steelers would like. As much as I'd like to see them add more of a home run hitter type in the backfield, I'm not sure they're going to find that guy this draft.
3.87: Paulson Adebo, CB, Stanford - Good athlete who flashes natural ball skills and plays with a tough demeanor that I think the Steelers would dig. Really looks like just an outside CB, so he doesn't really address losing Hilton, but (for better or worse) I think the Steelers believe they have a solid piece in Antoine Brooks Jr. and he'll help out on the inside with Sutton kicking in a lot.
Steelers trade 4.128 and a fourth rounder in 2022 to trade up with the Saints for 3.98
3.98: D'Ante Smith, T, East Carolina - The Steelers trade one of their fourths and a future fourth, banking on that they'll have extra picks next year once the compensatory picks shake out, to move up and finally take a tackle. Love this guy's tape and potential... really showed out at the Senior Bowl and the Steelers always love that.
4.140: Elerson Smith, EDGE, Northern Iowa - He's a lean project of an edge rusher. I figure he will definitely struggle early, but love the tools and explosion. Get him in the room with T.J. Watt and soak it up.
6.216: Whop Philyor, WR, Indiana - Reminds me of AB in some ways. Love his first gear and shiftiness.
7.245: Tariq Thompson, S, San Diego St.
7.254: Tedarell Slaton, DL, Florida

Tiny hands, smaller heart.
I could dig this. I like Adebo a lot, could live with Dickerson if that was the rest of the class. Browning is definitely a nice chess piece to develop, and Philyor has had some big games. Good slot prospect late. Slaton is massive and talented, if he can get/stay in shape, could very much be worth that flyer. I'm probably a bigger Sermon believer than most. Low mileage, and I think his arrow is actually pointing up in the NFL vs college, which is rare in a Power 5 back. Good move up for as good an OT prospect as we've got. Pretty nice haul, TB.

Like pretty much everything about that draft except for 2021 starting RB Benny Snail.

Hey @B2BDirectionalState , this may be a silly worry, but just watching Hainsey play and his body type... can you remember another Steelers o-linemen having a lower body that looks like Hainsey's? I really can't. It's.... odd. He needs about three months of nothing but leg days.bradshaw2ben wrote: ↑Thu Apr 22, 2021 2:08 amSteelers trade the #24 overall to Carolina for their second and third round picks

I would love watching Steelers fans lose their minds over us drafting a LB and S with our first two picks... but I like Browning and Grant (more so).

He has a nearly identical body type to the HOFer that just retired. He's built just like Pouncey to my eye. He may not look like much in lower body but he has a great base.tbsteel wrote: ↑Fri Apr 23, 2021 2:39 amHey @B2BDirectionalState , this may be a silly worry, but just watching Hainsey play and his body type... can you remember another Steelers o-linemen having a lower body that looks like Hainsey's? If you’d consider starting Travis Etienne, Jackson is much more NFL-ready, especially in the passing game and pass pro.

In the time since writing that, I've liked what I've seen of Jackson a lot... only question is, how long would it take a 6th round pick to work his way through the depth chart ahead of a Tomlin fave, with a truncated off-season, camp and preseason schedule? And would the Steelers be patient enough to draft RB that late, too.bradshaw2ben wrote: ↑Wed Apr 28, 2021 9:19 pmIf you’d consider starting Travis Etienne, Jackson is much more NFL-ready, especially in the passing game and pass pro.

As long as there’s not a 1st or second round pick ahead of him on the depth chart, I think the other guys enter camp with about the same opportunity.

I'll give you that the folks ahead of him would certainly be closer to the nothing side of little or nothing proven in the NFL, so there's not really too much T in the TVS, I'll give you that. Now if we could get them to admit featured backs don't have to be selected in r1 or r2, you might have something.

The Colts apparently saw something like what I saw in Deon Jackson... they gave him an enormous $45K signing bonus as PFA.
Aaron Wilson
@AaronWilson_NFL
Duke running back Deon Jackson got a $45,000 signing bonus from the Indianapolis Colts as a priority free agent, highest signing bonus for an undrafted rookie this year, per a league source. Rushed for 2,267 career yards, 18 touchdowns, 61 catches, 534 yards and four touchdowns

I think there’s a lot of strategy as to who gets drafted on day 3 and who gets UDFA. The Steelers drafted a guy who wasn’t going to be drafted by anyone and lost a UDFA they apparently had as a PFA over the guy now expected to contend for the starting slot corner role. Don’t even try to understand the motivations!

I'd have been happier with Mac McCain being the trade target instead of Louderthanmilk.
