Hal Smith very nearly had the same fame that Bill Mazeroski has enjoyed for 60 years. Smith's three-run Homer in the eighth inning of Game 7 in the 1960 World Series put the Pirates ahead 9-7. The Yankees would tie it up in the bottom of the eighth setting the stage for Maz's walk off.
Hal passed away yesterday (1/9/202) at age 89. RIP.

RIP Hal Smith
"Jack Lambert is mean and relentless wherever he goes, on and off the field! I do remember many times he would chase me in practice, but no way would I let him catch me" - Franco Harris
Thanks for recognizing this, Jack. I heard the news the day it was reported, and was glad to see you had posted something here. Often forgotten in that series and that legendary Game 7, he was also a true hero that day, along with Maz and everyone else who contributed to the victory. 1960 series remains my favorite, perhaps, because of the David and Goliath aspect of defeating the big boys, and in Game 7, at their own game.
