“Yeah we suck, be there is a chance we could suck slightly more if we try to correct the problem.” - Art Deuce (summarized by SteelPerch)
Here's a video from about 2 weeks ago on this topic (more-or-less says the same thing as the article): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KR-ESyH_Gg
The TL;DR summary of all of this is that RSN's paid out the ass for sports broadcasting rights just as cord cutting was starting to pickup steam. To cover costs, RSN's kept jacking up their prices. Since RSNs were increasing their price, customers (and eventually cable companies themselves) started telling them to fuck off, and it became sort of a death spiral.
It'll be interesting to see how the MLB, NBA, and NHL respond to all of this.
Side note - people love to dump on cable companies for all the useless channel bundles and exorbitant costs, but the networks themselves (Disney, Discovery/Time-Warner, etc) are equally to blame. It wasn't Comcast dictating you had to buy every TV network owned by DTW as a package.
