Now that the preseason is almost over, expect T.J. Watt to sign a contract extension shortly after the Carolina game that will make him the league's highest-paid defensive player.

He isn’t a horrible player. He is a good teammate. I’d gladly keep him on the team for reasonable $$$
He isn’t even close to worth record setting $$$

He's about to have A LOT of money for un-grumpus time.

Inevitable, honestly. Be interesting to see where they met in terms of guaranteed money.

Isn't T.J. Watt the same player who nearly beat out Aaron Donald for DPOY?K_C_ wrote: ↑Mon Aug 23, 2021 7:28 pmYou need to stop huffing paint. Watt is a superstar.

You really need to stop. You’re embarrassing yourself.

I bet when the dust settles he will have taken a Steeler discount and will still be the highest paid defensive player in the league. As many have pointed out, this is a organization friendly year to break the bank on your franchise player. Big boost to the salary cap next year and TJ will probably drop out of the top 5 defensive salaries.

Name ANY game changing play Watt has ever made in a game that mattered ??
Name EVEN ONE time he slammed the door on a good team and put them away ??
I can’t think of any
And it speaks to my point that you can’t claim he is THE best defender in the game.....

But let’s use your criteria of “only rings matter”.
So since this organization hasn’t won a “game that matters” since the first Obama administration, I say let’s not pay anyone on the current roster. Cut or trade them all, starting with your boy Ben effin Roethlisberger ,who has played like ass in his last two games that matter.
Clean house. Bring back Derwin Gray.
Derwin Gray…now there’s a guy that knows how to slam the door.
C’mon man!

You do realize that the Browns ran away from him all game long, right. Then you also realize that our brain god Tomlin decided that it was best to put a fucking LB on their fastest and most elusive WR in the slot, right. Cam Heyward got his ass kicked all game by a practice squader who hadn't even practiced with the team. You also have to realize that once Highsmith went down, we had fucking Cassius "turnstile" Marsh in who is likely going to be cut in order to keep one or possibly two rookies because he sucks so bad! You're constant vendetta against Watt is hilarious but truly sad. Take a valium and call it a season! You're obsession against Watt seeps into every damn thread on this board and it's getting real old. Take your vitriol down to Heinz Field on a Sunday and see how fans react to you - that should pretty much tell ya all you would need to know!SteelerDayTrader wrote: ↑Mon Aug 23, 2021 9:28 pmName ANY game changing play Watt has ever made in a game that mattered ??

KC's point that the playoff failures with Watt on the team have been overall group failures is valid. You could maybe name 3 or 4 Steelers who played like they meant it against Cleveland, and injuries had the defense a shell of itself by then.
Almost every damn game in 2020 was down to the wire, which drains the D. They were basically responsible for winning every game or not in 2019, as well. Don't think there's a comparable situation in the league the last two years to what that Steelers D had to slog through.

Nobody could reasonably argue he has been in 4 years
But if you just put that aside and look at his projected trade value vs his cost.....I think you make that move
Particularly given that OLB looks ok with Highsmith and Ingram etc
IMO highest paid defensive player in nfl history is too much for the kind of good but limited production Watt brings
Gorilla Warfare
Perhaps not game changing like, say, Troy, but that's a lofty standard. I'd argue in today's NFL, you almost have to play a robber/safety position to be in a place to get that many opportunities to really "change a game."
Is Donald (and I really like Donald, who doesn't?) that much more of a game changer than Watt? Their stock in trade is sacks, TFLs and the occasional resulting fumble, which by definition aren't as "game changing" as a big INT, for instance.
Watt has tons of sacks and TFLs (more than Donald), causes the odd fumble, and has generated points. It's pretty much as good as it gets as a front 7 player. If you're arguing that front 7 production isn't worth as much as back end production, well, maybe I could see that, but Watt definitely brings value to the D, and that OLB corps has best in the league potential this year because of it.
And we all know that "highest paid in history" thing has potential to change by October.

I’d hate for us to make a move that isn’t endorsed by STD.

Side note - I wonder if they can use some of their current cap space to offset the cost in future years. Since he's going to be playing on his 5th year option, is it possible to add bonus $ this season?
