Best in that they have Tomlin and a strong locker room.
This team lost to a bad Chicago team who’s QB didn’t even surpass 100 yards after boggling the national anthem issue.

Some players came out afterwords and said the team wasn’t as prepared as they should have been and said the anthem thing was a big distraction that week.

Our coaches have their hands full just trying to be good football coaches. I’d prefer they not also have to navigate and deal with social issues on what could be a daily basis.
Oh, I don't think you'll have to worry about that now.

The vast, VAST majority of players will be kneeling regularly if they play the national anthem. Most coaches will will likely join them.

Watch.

95, I agree with you except that getting a second string QB who can come in mid game & the next & be able to win is a dire need. A team with an aged QB & unfortunately, Ben is now that - requires not just an understudy but someone with starting experience & not one of the bums who started last season.

And what does that have to do with the coaches having to field CK questions daily if he was on the roster?

I simply pointed out last time this team faced a social justice situation it stubbed it’s toe.

And given I think our coaches already struggle putting together game plans etc I’d rather limit the things that take away focus from their actual job.
Jibba Jabber’s offense hasn’t scored more than 7 1st quarter points in 84 consecutive games. An NFL record by far. A historic amount of “easin in”. We are lucky to have him.

I agree.

I just am not at a point to proclaim that CK is that guy. Especially given how long he’s been away from the game and the fact he wasn’t playing well when he chose to opt out of his contract in SF.

We also have a staff that hasn’t developed a QB ummmm ever. So why would I think they would be the guys (can you say guys anymore these days?) to get CK back up to speed?

Do our coaches even have the desire to get a new backup up to speed or are they going to simply roll with the shit we already have in hopes it stops smelling?

This is pointless debate anyways as it isn’t even certain dude truly wants back on a roster. If he does and if he is genuine I’d support him here as long as he’s here to play football and help the Pittsburgh Steelers.

CK may have been gone for a good while & KC has shown excellent reasons in his posts how CK can be successful. But think as well how much CK has something to prove & if he has anything close to the ability - he will so driven to push himself to the extreme. It's a good point above & something I mentioned in a thread earlier that seems lost that almost all if not all players will be kneeling during the anthem including possibly Goodell if he ever steps on a field. Yes, probably many coaches, too although probabl not in Dallas. I don't think Jerry Jones is too enamored with Roger these days.

Oh, well now that KC from Steelerfury.com has said how CK can be successful it must be so.

At first I thought you might have been referring to Kevin Colbert.

I don’t see any reason to debate it till (a) he’s on our team or (b) we are suffering through multiple games of the lame duck while CK is tearing it up on another NFL team.

Both quite the stretch so I’m not going to hold my breath.

If the guy is truly serious he and his agent would organize a legitimate workout/showcase and see how things go.

And by workout/showcase I mean something other than that debacle they already did.

Sorry for the Kill Cowher / Kevin Colbert confusion. It's not that KC is the end all of football wisdom, it's just that he posted some convincing (to me) stats that showed CK might readily do well here. I'm not trying to cover both sides but I truly look forward to your posts, too & the knowledge that you reveal & endow. We've been together here for a long time. I was also glad to read that if CK made it to the shores of the Allegheny, Monongahela & Ohio & did well that you would be solidly behind him. Be well.

Reporters asking about Kaepernick would no longer be a distraction at all for these coaches. Especially for Mike Tomlin, one of the very few minority coaches in the NFL.

The vast majority of players will embrace Kaepernick, because the vast majority of players are either black and have working brains or are white and have working brains. Those that don't embrace him or have a problem with Kaep being in the NFL can go fuck themselves.

It doesn't matter who anybody speaks for. This is a FOOTBALL SITE. Go on whichever of the hundreds of available political sites suits your taste and spew it to everyone there. STOP DOING IT HERE. You're driving away posters.

I know it's the offseason, but at least TRY and act like responsible adults. B2B and several others volunteered tons of time and effort to build this platform to talk Pittsburgh Steelers football. Pretty disrespectful to just say a big fuck you to that and blatantly, repeatedly break the few rules set up for the good of the site.

Take it somewhere else.
It is a shame that a few posters here refuse to follow the rules. They seem to think they can influence or silence those that disagree with them. Thank you for trying to get the slow learners to leave.

Meh I dunno bout that. If he isn’t on our team Tomlin just gets asked the routine & watered down questions Pittsburgh media ask every week.

With Kaep here it would be that ratcheted up quite a bit IMO. To include national attention.

Maybe it would die off quickly. Maybe not.

And what if, just what if Kaep wasn’t doing better than Bibberty in practice and Ben goes down?

You think the national media sits quietly and says nothing as CK rides pine when a spot was open?

This isn’t as cut & dry as you seem to think IMO.

On a side note, pretty dang shitty the only thing football related to talk about is a guy hat is t even on a team and hasn’t been in years.

Mason played well in the preseason last year.

If Tomlin is smart and somehow we do sign Kaepernick, Tomlin shouldn’t give a fuck how great or how poor Mason or Kaepernick plays in the preseason. No sir.

No matter what, if Ben went down you call the guy who has had great success in the NFL AND you give that motherfucker a long, long leash before you turn to Mason.

I’d say the same thing if we were talking about Andy Dalton or Cam Newton or even a close to washed up Joe Flacco who somehow already got a job.

Mason proved he isn’t ready. Perhaps Mason never will be ready. Duck proved he isn’t an NFL player.

Go with the guy who has won big before and won’t shit himself in big moments.

If they sign Kaepernick, which I’ll admit is unlikely, he’d be the number 2.

No question.

I get and agree with all that KC.

I’m sure you can see and agree with my deeper point. That being, CK on a team means what happens to CK on that team is a national story.

Coach isn’t so free to make a b move involving CK.

You could easily flip my story. Say he is handed #2 but plays his way out of it. It’s not like that national media would simply be like welp, he ain’t got it no mo. Now all of a sudden coach is under a microscope he would not have been under.

In that situation, playing for a black coach might be ideal.

I don’t have much else to say bout it till something tangible happens with this. Right now it’s just us talking about it. Plus the whole “we are comfy with our back-up QB situation” nonsense.

Might not be true but with this bunch I tend to think it is.

I call BS on players and coaches *necessarily* being distracted by reporters asking questions about CK.

1. Are reporters going to be interrupting film sessions asking about CK?
2. Are reporters going to interrupt practice asking about CK?
3. Are reporters going to interrupt dinner with the fam to ask about CK?

Who gives a fuck about it being a story? Be a Patriot and say rigidly without fail “Our focus is on football.”

I’d be more on board if AV was not a Steeler. I would be nervous about CK kneeling next to AV with hand over heart and whether factions would form in the lr.

Other issues aside, hell yes I’d take the ghost of CK over the hot steaming garbage backing up Ben.

Agreed on the coaching distraction, Lit. "On to Cincinnati." It's an interesting thought about Villanueva, but jumping to the conclusion that since he served and feels honor bound to stand, he'd feel negatively towards someone who chose to exercise their First Amendment right to peacefully protest seems a little premature.

You answered your own question. Although many of us here, me included, consider Mike Tomlin a bullshit artist/douchebag, black or white there might not be a more highly respected coach in the NFL than Aviators. He is THAT highly regarded by the league and the vast majority of fans (even our rivals).

If Ben went down and Kaepernick played terribly in relief, then Mason was called upon to relieve Kaepernick (like Duck was last season when Mason stunk it up) I don't think you'd hear much of anything from the media or any angry fans. 1) The Steelers would have already been given a massive amount of cred for signing Kaepernick in the first place 2) Elevating him to the #2 job over a guy who had the #2 job all of last season would be seen as significant and 3) a highly regarded African American coach who helped bring Kaepernick back into the NFL fold pulls the plug on the Kaep experiment because he plays terribly.

No idea what negative narrative towards the Steelers any news organization could possibly spin if it went down like that.

Folks want Kaepernick to have a chance to play in the NFL again. Nobody but nobody expects him to be handed anything on a silver platter because in the NFL, no matter what, winning is pretty much all that matters. If Kaepernick doesn't help you win, he's gotta go.

I think we forget that it is possible to talk to players on the team prior to making an offer. Suppose Tomlin goes to AV and AV says make the offer. Ok, then.

When you see 80%-90% of players (and coaches) THROUGHOUT THE LEAGUE kneeling weekly, what Kaepernick would do on the Steelers sidelines won't matter much at all.

Other players and coaches were afraid to support Kaepernick 2 years ago. They are going to be absolutely ALL IN to support Kaepernick this year and beyond.

Things have changed immensely in the last 2 years.

Firstly, the only connection between taking a knee and lack of respect for the flag was a contrivance purely created for cheap political theater, long since almost universally debunked. Secondly, Villanueva graduated from West Point. He surely knows that the First Amendment is one of the things he served to protect. I don't think there's even a need for a talk.

I agree it probably won't be a distraction amongst the players
But it will be an absolute MEDIA circus

As was touched on with the anthem thing, I'm not sure Tomlin is up for that kinda job
Remember before Ben went down, there was definite speculation MT was on the hot seat

Maybe. I don’t know AV’s mind. Bottom line:
1. I’m ok signing CK as long as Tomlin has done his locker room due diligence and
2. I don’t buy media as distraction BS for a second. Coaches and players can just say “Focused on the game. Next question?”

The idea that Tomlin will be clutching his pearls over media rather than preparing for games strikes me as silly. And the AV team in the tunnel fiasco was way overblown IMO. Team has lost to plenty of bottom feeders with no controversy preceding.

This is a coach that got HOF production out of AB, keeping God knows what (incidents going back to his rookie year the media never reported have come out since he left, and I'm sure there are more) in house, for 7 years. Allegedville and the motorcycle. James Harrison. The team weathered all that intact. He can handle the media just fine.

Also, doesn't it become a much smaller story after Week One is over? Once "Are you going to kneel or not?" is answered?

Pretend you're going to a buddy's house and he asks you to take your shoes off when inside.
Do you ignore it because wearing your shoes are more comfortable?

Don't be a dick and track mud all over this place

Hmmmmm....

Gojira....

Wikipedia says “Gojira are a French heavy metal band from Bayonne. Originally formed as Godzilla in 1996, they changed their name to Gojira in 2001.”

5150 is a Peavy amp they use, apparently.

Dude, you’re not a stateside roadie for French heavy metal musicians, are you?

I don’t buy media as distraction BS for a second. Coaches and players can just say “Focused on the game. Next question?”

The idea that Tomlin will be clutching his pearls over media rather than preparing for games strikes me as silly.
Sure they can say that. That’s what they should always be doing when a mic and camera gets put in their face.

But people don’t do that. Some can’t help themselves. Some will have to talk. Some even could say nothing wrong and yet the media will twist their words or context and create a story from that.

I agree with your point. I just think you are giving people too much credit.

Plus, there is the whole stubbing toe at Chicago over the anthem example.

Maybe Tomlin learned from it.

But then, learning from and not repeating the same mistakes hasn’t always been a strong suit of his

My skepticism comes from what our staff has “put on tape”.

This could be an ideal situation for CK if everything fell into place.

Jibba Jabber’s offense hasn’t scored more than 7 1st quarter points in 84 consecutive games. An NFL record by far. A historic amount of “easin in”. We are lucky to have him.

Bayonne, NJ, I'd understand, but Bayonne, France, huh? Interesting. Though I'm currently listening to a live album by Trad Gras Stenar, the "Swedish Grateful Dead," so anything is possible.
Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile...

He may or may not be into metal, but i’m guessing he’s def not a fan of the thrash band Municipal Waste.
