A team with better players?

Better coaching??

I can’t recall an instance, maybe ever

Conversely, there are a multitude of instances where they lost to inferior teams

No, no. That was an amazing coaching job. I particularly liked how Tomlin schemed open Minkah’s pinky on the PAT attempt!

They beat the 12-5 Titans last year.

They've also beaten Baltimore (with Lamar) on a few occasions

I liked Tomlin scheming to get the long snapper injured.

the only way tomlin hasn’t beaten a lot of teams with better coaches is if he’s one of the best coaches ever.

Better question is when is the last time Tomlin’s team beat a legit top 10 QB in the playoffs? 2008 they beat Rivers and Warner. Otherwise they beat a bad QB or got boat raced and the D got destroyed.

Since we know from many past posts here on SteelerFury that the team with the better QB is ALWAYS supposed to win because no other position on the team matters, here's a question:

In how many games this year did Tomlin have the better QB? I might submit that between Mitch and a rookie, Tomlin NEVER had the better QB this year. Therefore, any loss Tomlin took was merely to be expected, and any win Tomlin got was a win against a better team.

Let's remember that Tomlin beat Tom Brady with a rookie and Mitch Trubisky. I think we can also look to the 2019 season to find examples of Tomlin beating better teams. I seem to remember beating the Rams that year.

I submit that Tomlin had a rookie with less experience.

Okay

So we know the teams schemes on defense work against teams that can’t throw the ball. We’ve seen that again this season

But we also know, they can’t stop a team that can throw the ball, for shit, unless the other team makes the mistakes

I think Mick is pointing out the inconsistency in the logic on this board.

There's a ton of overlap among posters complaining about Tomlins inability to develop talent and being an incompetent coach, while also arguing the only teams he beats are those with inferior coaches and/or talent.

If you're winning the majority of your games every year, then he's either the luckiest coach in history or he's actually good at some aspects of his job.

Ahhh

Fair enough

And I’m guilty of that

But, I personal believe that the team wins, in part, in spite of his schemes

I’m sure he’s a really solid dude. The players clearly fight for him, but that doesn’t exclude mediocre game planning

Tomlin is a really good person that everyone likes and respects. He runs a conservative scheme that keeps the games close. The organization is also very conservative and consistent in everything they do and usually puts together a competitive roster. This is how they consistently win games and challenge for a playoff spot every year. Where Tomlin gets exposed is in the playoffs where his inability to put together anything more than his basic keep it close and try to win it in the 4th quarter game plan isn't enough. Think about it. He's used that same model his whole career. He's got nothing else. All those years when his defense sucked he still refused to do anything else. He gets in the playoffs against the best teams and he refuses to adjust. Same shit no matter what. Rookie QB and he puts him in the same spot. OC sticks him in endless 3rd and longs even in the final drives to win the game. Nothing changes. Defenses calling out the plays and no one cares. But hey, he's a great guy. At least we have that going for us.
Howard Griffith had to resort to chop-blocking him during the 1997 AFC Championship Game. An incredulous Kirkland asked Griffith, “Why do you have to use cheap tactics like chop-blocking?” Griffith replied “Why do you have to be a 300-pound linebacker?”

You guys complain, but he's the most winningest coach in history!!!
