So basically two 7th round picks

They are really cleaning house of anyone that isn’t on board

Good for them.
Going off of the old Draft Value chart (for whatever its worth) - Moving from Pick 120 to 98 has the equivalent value of......Pick 120.

So if you put any stock in that chart, the move up is roughly equal to a late 4th.

Mason was NOT coming back -- as long as he had another (any) offer somewhere. I was told that by a very good source close to him.

this is great news for me. Reinforces my confidence in evaluating qbs. Never liked pickett. Didn't think he would be the guy. I did think they should give him another year with new cord but they knew. I was totally right about him.
Irony is, most of the other names people liked have arguably been worse. Except for Mr. Irrelevant. Glad we spent that R7 on a second QB that year who couldn't even make the PS.

In a year they were likely to get nothing for him. Now this clears the decks. If Wilson works out PS are a playoff team and perhaps a contender. If he doesn't? PS will likely have a losing season and be in the rookie QB sweepstakes.

Or is this Khan just getting rid of all the junk on the offense so Tomlin can’t run what he wants?

Maybe it is like Moneyball when Billy Beane finally just traded the first baseman so the coach could not block the lineup the GM wanted the coach to field.

True.

But this is also MT.

MT told KP to go kick rocks.

Kahn did the deal.

I'm thinking and hoping this will be Tomlin's last year. Pickett was Tomlin's guy and he trades him after playing a little under 2 full seasons. I don't think anyone here would argue how Pickett horribly regressed last year, but I was thinking it was due to having the worst Offensive coordinator in the league. I had no problem giving him one more year with a competent OC, Christ they gave Bush 4.
I hate having another check down qb in Wilson who also never utilizes the middle of the field. I really don't know what to think about this year coming up but I will still be cheering for the Steelers and definitely won't be hoping Wilson sucks because I didn't agree with the signing.

League wide, is there a more disfunction offensive side of a team than MT's O right now? I know there are some bad O situations out there, but we're right there with them, imo.

I'm shocked because it opens up more holes on O. We are down to one QB and really one real WR on offense. That's not a good place to be a week into free agency with only 6 draft picks. The FO and Tomlin really must have been pissed at Kenny.

I still don't understand how Fields would work. We have so many holes still...we can't afford to give away more draft capital...and we aren't going to pay Fields either. That seems like a waste of breath.

I think they are going to go cheap vet plus mid-round pick. Problem is Joe Milton and Spencer Rattler suck. Michael Pratt is OK, but won't likely ever be a #1.
I agree. More FA signings must be coming up. Now holes at center QB and #2 WR. RT could be a hole if we take them at their word that Jones is moving to LT

I think Pickett was not a Tomlin guy which is why he got bounced out. Colbert should have never run that last draft. He screwed up the Steelers badly.

Pickett will likely go on to be a good QB with the right team. Watch.

2.5+ years of Canada. TWO AND A HALF! More surprising then these guys forcing their way off the team is that none of them ever took a swing at Tomlada.

Fortunately it looks like the guys on the defensive side are perfectly content with the occasional 1-and-done playoff appearance.

Wow. Ok. Didn't see this coming.

Way out of character for the Steelers. They are usually so conservative, afraid of opening up holes on the roster, hanging onto guys too long. Moving DJ and now Pickett are super aggressive moves, not living in their fears.

Buckle up!

Now, trade for Fields. He's a huge upgrade on the "grab a failed 1st rounder and hope" tactic compared to keeping Pickett or trying to revive Trubisky.

So who will it be, Tannehill or Fields for the second most important position in football?

It always seems like such a half-ass, desperate move. As if drafting the top-QB on your board was the answer to finding the next FQB. It was almost a commodity-like view of QB with no apparent recognition that there's only about 1 FQB every other draft.

It looks like none of those guys in that draft were worth a premium pick. Imagine if they pocketed that Kenny pick and double-dipped in R7 to take Purdy?

But we all kind of knew this was likely to be the case given their inability to even draft and develop a quality backup. Maybe that could have been Rudolph, but Tomlin's insistence on hiring Canada, and sticking with him, sealed that deal.

Back to the "trade for Fields" idea for a minute....

I was against the idea, BUT, IF(?) they now plan on spending a 4th or 6th draft pick on a QB, then why not go ahead and spend a 6th (if you can get him for that) or maybe a 4th with a 5th in return, to grab him. He'll only actually cost us ~$2.25M after displacement. Hmmm....

Yes that Tom.

Steelers Defensive Stars Recruited Russell Wilson

New Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson was recruited to the team by the defensive leaders of the team.
Published 2 hours ago on March 15, 2024 By Nick Farabaugh Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson at his introductory press conference, Mar. 15, 2024 - Nick Farabaugh / Steelers Now

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially signed Russell Wilson. But the process for him to land with the team took a lot of work, in Wilson’s own words. Publicly, he met with the New York Giants and then flew to Pittsburgh to visit the Steelers. While doing that, he talked with Mike Tomlin and Omar Khan. But even before he got to Pittsburgh for a visit, those three were on Zoom for each other for over an hour and a half.

That was until Wilson received a call from someone on the Steelers trying to recruit him. It was star Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick challenged Wilson, asking him if he wanted to compete. Before landing in Pittsburgh for his visit, Wilson talked to not just Fitzpatrick but also FaceTimed with Cam Heyward and talked with T.J. Watt.

“I got to talk to Cam Heyward, talked for an hour on FaceTime,” Wilson said. “We got to talk, and it was this cool experience of a guy who’s been at the top his game for so long, but also a man whose made a difference in the community, a guy’s whose made a difference not just in Pittsburgh, but around the country and just all the things he’s done. He’s solidified himself as one of the best players on the interior in the game.”

While that was a cordial meeting between the two, Russell Wilson revealed that Fitzpatrick asked him if he was ready to compete and win football games. It was clear that the top group was recruiting Wilson to come play for the team.

The Steelers were able to meet with Wilson before the start of free agency because the Broncos gave him permission to talk to other teams after telling him that he will be released. Wilson has not had reported contact with any other team so far, though there is expected to be interest from other parties.

The Steelers were searching for competition for starting quarterback Kenny Pickett, and Wilson represented some of the strongest available competition on the open market. He could also came at a minuscule price. The Broncos gave Wilson a guaranteed $39 million in salary for the 2024 season, and any amount the Steelers or any other team would pay him would simply be removed from Denver’s commitments.

That would be funny! And later it is reported that Kenny got in a huge fight with Tomlin and told him his antiquated offense would never win shit because he is afraid to throw over the middle. The U shaped offense is terrible Mikey just terrible! And hiring a billionaire’s son with daddy issues isn’t going to fix anything!

And then he proceeds to draw the flux capacitor equivalent for NFL offenses in a playbook and says this is the future! But MT jettisons him and we are in football purgatory for the next decade!
