Was Broderick Jones a Bad Pick?
Was Broderick Jones a Bad Pick?
Let's be honest. He is playing out of position but he's been at RT for a year now. His technique still looks like shit. He's not a student of the game in any way shape or form. If his elbow is so bad, why was he playing?
I'm VERY VERY concerned.

I think that right arm/elbow is fucked. I mean, that's the hope at least, as he was just completely manhandled and didn't look like he had any punch power at all.
But yeah, looking like a bust at this point, can't lie. Khan/Weidl's first pick and a guy they traded up for. Woof.

So far he's looking more like the Jarvis Jones of OTs.
I was not excited about the pick. Everything screamed athlete playing football. Sometimes those guys develop and sometimes they don't.tbsteel wrote: ↑Sun Aug 18, 2024 1:00 pmI think that right arm/elbow is fucked. I did not buy the narrative that no signs of natural ability to know how to leverage his body was because he didn't have to.
I'm not giving up on him. We shall see.
Throw. The. Football. On. First. Down.
I mean it's year two now and even with a bad elbow I saw a) very poor footwork and b) way too upright of a stance. He never struck me as a kid who paid attention to detail, but in the NFL you better do that, or you are cooked.
WTF has Meyer done with him for over a yr now?

He is hurt. He played well last year.
Are the guys charged with developing young players NFL caliber?
No.
No.
"I'm institutionalized, man," he joked. "I gotta have it. I just love the challenges week in and week out that this job provides: the growth in it, the collective growth, the individual growth."
I don't know if Jones was a bad pick but right now he's a bad player. Started off pretty well playing out of position last year but headed downhill quickly. By the end of the season, he was one of the worst starting tackles in the NFL. And, the Steelers have done him no favors this preseason switching back and forth between positions. Jones is all discombobulated right now, closer to bust status than solid starter.

It was a bad sign to me that the Jets wanted him so bad. If the Jets think a player is worth a 1st round pick, chances are he sucksHavoc wrote: ↑Sun Aug 18, 2024 1:52 pmI was not excited about the pick. Everything screamed athlete playing football. I don't know. The injury seems like it could be an excuse - if he was hurt, why was he playing? Tomlin said before the game "everyone healthy would play", which again seems to imply if he was hurt he wouldn't be out there.
Maybe he got hurt during the game. I guess it would have had to be the first play if so.

Yes. He was a bright spot last year. Why in God's name would be be out there playing in a meaningless game if he's hurt? Even a little. That's the question
If he's truly that hurt, then Tomlin should be fired right away for playing him in a preseason game. I don't think he's that hurt. I think he's sloppy. He started off well last year, but as soon as DEs and OLBs got the book on him they started beating him with technique. He played very poorly down the stretch and so far it looks like he's done no work on his technique all off season.
I was fearful he'd be a lazy player that relied on raw athleticism and now it may be coming true.

You'd think after seeing the success of other olinemen with other teams that moved them back to their original position after they failed here, someone in the organization would realize that maybe it's not a good idea to move every guy. Nah, if it's broke, no reason to fix it with that impressive streak of non losing seasons. Obviously their methods breed success. Who needs playoff wins?
Howard Griffith had to resort to chop-blocking him during the 1997 AFC Championship Game. An incredulous Kirkland asked Griffith, “Why do you have to use cheap tactics like chop-blocking?” Griffith replied “Why do you have to be a 300-pound linebacker?”
I'm actually not sure a move to LT actually does that much for Jones. His technique right now is so bad that Dan Moore looks All Pro compared to him. When is he going to put the work in to learn fundamentals and technique? Doesn't look like he did this offseason.

The O Line this year will be Moore-Isaac-Frazier-Daniels-Fauranu
Jones may go on the IL or he will be a swing tackle this year. He is the 3rd best OT on the roster.

Based on last night…he might not even be third best.tango_mike wrote: ↑Sun Aug 18, 2024 6:39 pmThe O Line this year will be Moore-Isaac-Frazier-Daniels-Fauranu

They needed to fire the Oline coach three years ago, but yet here he is.
Fire this coach…fire that coach…
On and on and on it goes!
There is just one coach that needs to be fired.

They picked a high ceiling low floor (8 college starts) guy. He could bust out of the league or get a bust in Canton.
What I don't get is the position nonsense. They are a) committed to Jones as a player and b) committed to Fautanu starting on the right side, so why even bother with him at RT. As Moore is the likely swing tackle, he's the one that has to be able to play both positions.
Either they are not actually committed to Jones or they are complete idiots. Maybe both.

The only guy they seem to be completely committed to IS Moore -- you know, the guy that has looked below average-to-terrible for three years now. If they wanted a long-term RT, they should have drafted Dawand Jones.
“We are the stupidest fucking franchise ever.” — Smithessmokin
Injury aside, I'd look to moving him to LG, since he apparently prefers the left side, and his footwork doesn't seem to be viable for a LT
Just a thought

That would be one big strike against Khan! Move up in the draft to get a guy who was a huge question mark to begin with only for him to move to a guard position that you could have saved draft capital and gotten a really good guard in the 2nd. They could have taken another player of need, make CB instead! But..., they played the worthless Moore at LT for 3 freakin' years despite his huge sucktitude. When they drafted Jones, they knew they wanted him for T. Why the hell not move Moore out of LT and insert Jones. You telling me that a 3rd rounder had better value at the position than a 1st rounder they moved up for? Tomlin must like sucking Moore's dick!
Man I miss Mike Munchak.

Hell yes Jones was a bad PICKWas Broderick Jones a Bad Pick?
But, is he a bad PLAYER?
Unless he gets traded to the Rams we may never know.
To Colin Cowherd’s point, Mike Tomlin knows NOTHING about offensive football so literally EVERY offensive pick is a bad PICK because they’re STUCK playing for Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Take my guy Najee.
Yes, I Roll Tide but I’ve readily admitted he has some physical limitations
However
Najee did want to improve going so far as to ask Tomlin for HELP.
“Hey Coach T, can we stay after practice and watch some film?”
“Nope. Gotta get home to watch the Flintstones with my boy, Dino”
More from Najee
Said practice at Alabama much more difficult than the NFL
Didn’t look to me like the Steelers even practiced after watching two EMBARRASSING preseason games.
Back to Broderick Jones.
DP and I don’t miss a Georgia game.
We know that Jones, like a lot of Kirby Smart players, has elite athletic traits, but lacks refinement.
That type of PICK requires COACHING and PLAYER DEVELOPMENT
From MIKE TOMLIN?
It is to LAUGH
So Yes
Jones was a Bad Pick
A VERY, VERY, BAD PICK
And Tomlin is a VERY, VERY, BAD FOOTBALL COACH
Go Cam Johnston!
Go Skenes!!
GO LIVVVVVY!!!
Nick Markakis on Astros: "Every guy over there needs a beating."
The problem is Jones is not a self-starter. Self-starters are needed under Tomlin because he doesn't hold players accountable (nor do his terrible position coaches).
Jones is lazy. There is only one explanation why, after playing RT last year, his technique looks sloppy and out of sync. He has not put the work into his craft. He's the anti-Herbig.

I have no insight on it and pure speculation on my part, but the early Latrobe photos and video this year I thought Broderick looked a little sloppy physically and out of shape. But then there was talk about how he was being a leader and yadda yadda so who knows.

I don’t want to delude myself into rationalizing a pick that might turn out as a bust, but I have to think Broderick Jones is dealing with this brace and elbow injury. But then why is he playing a preseason game?
I’m going to give Khan a pass for now, considering he seems to have otherwise drafted some OL talent and hit on those picks.
