What I think I know after week 2
Here are some rambling thoughts after week 2.
1. This offense would be completely inept without George Pickens. We all hate watching it now, but take away the handful of big plays that he produces per game and it’s really unwatchable and untenable. How good would Pickens stats look if not for the bullshit OPI call last week, the hold wiping out his deep catch today, and the pick play that took his TD away. He’s matured in year 2 and they absolutely cannot afford for him to miss any games this year.
2. The Steelers offense is equally really close and really far away from being good. They just need time to develop the O line and a second good WR. They’re really far away because the HC philosophy is risk averse, ball control, ugly football. I could only imagine what Ben’s career could’ve looked like under an Andy Reid or Shanahan. Fields looked really good in the first half and has been accurate on deep balls so far. Then Mike Tomlin football happened and he decided to nurse a 2 score lead instead of trying to win by 3 scores. Due to that fact absolutely nothing will ever make this offense ever look as good as it could, because ugly isnt just the destination it’s also the goal. The Arthur Smith hire showed what they desire to be. A ball control, conservative, run heavy offense. Anyone see what Clint Kubiak is doing down there in New Orleans? Another Shanahan disciple tearing shit up while we are intentionally stuck in the Stone Age. Kubiak was hired two weeks after we hired Smith. Kubiak was the pass game coordinator in SF. We hate passing and scoring so he wasn’t ever considered for a job here.
3. I don’t know if Broderick Jones sucks, or if he’s lazy, or hurt, or if he’s just a young guy developing. What I do know, the Steelers have absolutely mismanaged him. A young guy with relatively few collegiate starts, he needed more reps last year. Coming into year two, he should have been named the starting LT from the first day of camp. Fuck Dan Moore’s feelings. Flopping Jones to the RT spot, then platooning him at LT at camp, then making him rotate series today is all just a really fucking stupid thing to do with a 1st round pick at LT that you moved up for. He was very measured and level headed in his post game interview. He didn’t t hide from tough questions, didn’t sulk or make excuses. He came off mature. I’m hoping he’s not a bust, just a guy who was put in a tough spot by a franchise that hates offense. This run heavy offense suits him well if he gets a chance to settle in. He was pretty good in week 1.
4. NFL needs age limits on these sideline guys working the sticks. 3 games this weekend where one of these old fucks got knocked out or had a heart attack during a game, and I don’t have time to watch that shit. Every time the sticks injured guy looked 80. You telling me they can’t find 30 year olds to work some damn sticks? If prisoners can clean highways they can work sticks. Might put a few former players to work that way.
5. Patrick Queen never impressed me much in Baltimore. I thought he was overrated because he was a first round pick and played MLB for the Ravens. He’s not super physical and misses more tackles than you’d like. He can run and covers fairly well. He’s an upgrade here for sure, but through two weeks he’s the same guy I saw in Baltimore. Hope he improves greatly, but I don’t expect that at all.
6. Playoffs? It’s early, but there are a few teams with a real shot at winning the AFC. KC obviously. I think the Texans are a really good and complete young team that is growing. Bills with Josh Allen are always a threat. After that, Ravens and Bengals if they get right have potential to do some damage. Chargers are right there too if you like ball control and defense and ultra conservative football. Steelers could join that group if they figure out some ways to make the passing game a real threat, but they can’t and they won’t so just making the playoffs is the realistic goal.
Bonus: I really don’t ever root against teams or players much. I root for my team and their interests and that’s it. With that said, if the Colorado Buffalos lose every game the rest of the year and Caleb Williams is a massive bust, that’d be cool with me.

Preach. And yes, are things so bad for Boomers that they need to run the sticks during NFL games and risk getting run over by a 300lb lineman?
The hell is with that?

Despite being mismanaged, Broderick Jones needs to be better. Soon.

This is why I've completely given up on ever being a SB contending team again until Tomlin is gone. Everything that's happened the last decade has been exactly what Tomlin wants. He's continued to squeeze the offense down to what we have today. In an overwhelmingly slanted offensive league, our guy refuses to compete. You talk about what Ben could have done with an offensive coach, imagine how much worse the last decade would have been if not for Ben holding on to that gunslinger's mentality. I think that's the only reason we didn't have this (no) offense a lot sooner. I know he will never honestly talk about it but I'd love to hear what Ben thinks about how much better he could have been under an offensive coach.because ugly isnt just the destination it’s also the goal
Howard Griffith had to resort to chop-blocking him during the 1997 AFC Championship Game. An incredulous Kirkland asked Griffith, “Why do you have to use cheap tactics like chop-blocking?” Griffith replied “Why do you have to be a 300-pound linebacker?”

Great post, especially #5.
A lot of money for someone being outplayed by Elandon Roberts.

2-0 with some help coming in Semaulo and Roman. Not pretty, but I'll take it.

There were some nice media reports coming out of camp on Queen, and I was, with the pedigree, hoping to be pleasantly surprised and impressed. After two games, #5 is correct. I'm underwhelmed. In an ideal world, be nice for Payton Wilson to get some of that clock, but at Queen's salary, that's probably a pipe dream.
Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile...
I agree the offense is close to being pretty good but I don't think it's with Justin Fields. Fields threw a few dimes yesterday. Very impressive throws. But he is not good enough to overcome a run-run-pass offense in the 2nd half. When a defense stacks the box and run blitzes on early downs, he can't overcome 3rd and long. He doesn't see the field well enough when there are a lot of bodies back there flooding the secondary.
So, clearly the coaches don't trust him to throw on early downs. My question is will Tomlin let Arthur Smith throw more on early downs with Russ? Probably not...but that's our only hope. We can't turtle our way through a full season and against better teams.

3. I'm not saying Broderick Jones is or isn't a bust. I'm just saying that the 2023 draft is over. When deciding what to do with Jones, it shouldn't matter what round he was drafted in or what they gave up to get to the 14th slot. He's on the team now, and so are the other tackles. They should play the guys who are playing well, and who give the team the best chance of winning, short term and to some extent long term. Never mind how the team felt about him in April 2023 or how much they are paying him.
“ But Brian was the quarterback. He lay on the ground like a sniper had shot him, so they threw me out. It’s big entertainment now, protect the quarterback, $200 to your favorite charity.”

Had they used the "IR Designated to return" tag, he'd have had to miss a minimum of 4 games. So it's fair to speculate they expect him back (at least for) the Colts in Week 4.
Good stuff, Perch
Fields played well in the first half. I specifically remember 3 dimes including a badass pin point throw deep downfield while on the run. I was impressed.
Thru 2 games Fields is last in the league in throws over 10 yards.

I believe they got two long DPI calls on long passes on first and ten.

We are 2-0, after two road games in which we are in little danger of losing, and first in the division. Yet all see on the game thread and recaps are a bunch of chickenshit littles complaining and prognosticating doom and gloom. Nitpicking the HC for "stupid shit" they are overreacting to, criticizing player stuff that you don't have full perspective on, all while ignoring the great things our team is doing. Defense is awesome, Harris is running like a madman, Warren woke up a little and whomever is punting or kicking is keeping us in the games.
Saying we have an "Unwatchable Offense" is like when women use the word toxic to describe all her ex boyfriends. It's a great buzz word, but the offense is doing exactly (outside of some penalties) what it's supposed to do; protect the QB by forcing the defense to do something other than rush the QB, dominate TOP while getting points, and, most importantly, do not turn the ball over.
Unwatchable is seeing a lot of offenses forcing their QBs to be the next Patrick Mahommes, and then getting mad when he turns it over or can't convert 3rd downs. Go watch that Bears/Texans game on both offenses were terrible. It was just stupid poorly called football that turned into an exciting game. Both Williams and Stroud got beat up last night and their OC didnt alter the plans or add protections. Just take a beating trying to make plays- thats not winning football.

So knowing that you dont ask the QB to do too much, you play to the defense and give them rest and a few points, and you hold on to the ball. Once Russ gets in there you will see an improvement because there is some great play design going on in the 2nd and 3rd tiers of the defense that Fields just isn't seeing enough to hit consistently.Pittsburgh is 7-1 in games it has forced multiple turnovers since 2023 and 0-3 when forcing zero turnovers. Over the past three seasons and now including last week, the Steelers are 29-7 when they won or tied the traditional turnover battle. Pittsburgh is 0-15-1 when they lost that battle over that stretch.

Lot's of ways to skin a cat and win in the NFL:
- Scoring a ton of points
- Winning turnover battle
- Special Teams dominance (this has eroded with the new kicking rules)
- Play lights out defense
I'm not advocating for Run N Shoot but want to know what else helps your defense more than TOP? Scoring points. Because you eliminate dancing on the margins of completely shutting down the opposition but just 1 blown defensive assignment will get you a loss.
Do you think it's taxing on the defense to protect these 1 score leads? What about last week in Atl where they were in control from a momentum and TOP mindset, but the Falcons were 80 yards away from taking the lead from us?
Why does KC's defense look fresh during the playoffs? Because they aren't in these dogfights for 18 weeks in the regular season like we are.

KC gets you into a passing war in which they have the offensive and defensive advantage. But you see what happened when Baltimore wore them down pounding the ball in the first half and suddenly the Chiefs had no pass rush or run defense after the third. The Ravens went down the field with ease in the fourth.Deebo wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2024 7:38 pm

I agree there are a lot of ways to skin a cat. But it's a matter of what tools you have at your disposal. But what's easier and most efficient? Turning Fields into the second coming of Joe Montana or playing to the defense you spent time, money, and energy building? Defense spent the majority of the Atlanta game on the sidelines and when they got in there, the Falcons were on the 3 or at a play calling disadvantage and having to get a TD to win. That's easy work when youre rested - same in Denver. 4th quarter Defense was fresh at altitude and good enough to lock it down in the red zone.
It's easy to say you want to score points but if you looked at that Bears/Texans game you see what happens when you put the onus of scoring into the hands of a QB and allow him to play hero ball- lots of turnovers, sacks, and possessions to defend. There is a low percentage for success asking a 1 or 2nd year QB to win games without a run game or plays that slow down the defense. A low percentage.
There is nothing wrong with this offense. There are points and yards in it. But if you have a guy that can't see the TE zone beater, the RB check down, or have the patience to wait until the safety takes inside trips, the guy while the point has beaten his man badly for six- then you have to just allow him to make the safe throw and get it with his legs and teach him during the film sessions- while you stack wins.
You get Wilson and Semulo back in there and its balance and points and everyone shuts the fuck up about unwatchable.

You do have good points. I'm watching games these last 2 weeks and there has been some really bad QB play because coaches are trying to turn their QB's into Allen, Burrow, Mahomes etc etc. Just yesterday 49ers lost to Sam Darnold without Jefferson. What did Purdy do with all those weapons he has. Last night's games was bad. Caleb will be another QB destroyed by Da Bears org. Can't run the ball and has no o-line. All these great Rookie QB's and combined they have 0 TD's (passing) so far this season. Thinking some Rookie QB will come here (next season) and save this team is unrealistic.VeritasSteel wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2024 8:16 pmKC gets you into a passing war in which they have the offensive and defensive advantage. I think Wilson needs to prove he’s a viable NFL wideout before making the claim that getting him “back” will provide balance and points for the offense. You get Wilson and Semulo back in there and its balance and points and everyone shuts the fuck up about unwatchable.
He’s not taken a single snap yet in this league.

What I think I know is that the Steelers have another high level defense this season.
Whether it is fully elite remains to be seen, but when faced with any adversity so far it has responded well.
The Falcons got a gift of a penalty on Watt which negated a turnover and scored the next play. Pittsburgh's defense responded by shutting them out the 2nd half.
Denver looked like it was about to score after a big play yesterday, and the defense responded by creating a turnover.
Tougher assignments await, but there is a lot to be excited about concerning this year's edition of the Steelers defense. So far it has answered every bell.
Whether it is fully elite remains to be seen, but when faced with any adversity so far it has responded well.
The Falcons got a gift of a penalty on Watt which negated a turnover and scored the next play. Pittsburgh's defense responded by shutting them out the 2nd half.

Ah maybe. My bad if so.Jobu wrote: ↑Tue Sep 17, 2024 12:45 amI think he’s talking about Russ.955876 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2024 10:25 pmI think Wilson needs to prove he’s a viable NFL wideout before making the claim that getting him “back” will provide balance and points for the offense. You get Wilson and Semulo back in there and its balance and points and everyone shuts the fuck up about unwatchable.
He’s not taken a single snap yet in this league.
We have so many Wilson’s these days hard to keep them straight.
Thought he was talking bout our tiny rookie WR that’s never done anything in this league

One thing I know I know.
I know I am jealous of every #2 & #3 WR in the league. I miss Ray Ray McCloud, Steven Sims, and quite a few other players scattered about the league.

Offense has to stop making massive mistakes, specifically dumb ass pens. Killing drives and taking points off the board.
I agree Perch tough to know what to make of the Offense, but 13 and 18 points is nowhere near good enough.
Jones...looks lost. He needs to be put on the bench.
For all the Moore doubters and I was one, through two games he has been excellent. Has he made a jump? Well, he will get a test v Chargers.
Cory Trice was at one point early in camp looking he might get cut. He has gone from that to someone who seems to be improving by the game.
Queen has been piss poor. Roberts not much better. Can PS bring back Spillane? Sigh
Really thought Fautanu looked the business. Fraser also another solid game. Oline with Sem back, TF fulltime at RT has a chance to improve significantly.

More evidence this staff is incompetent. For all the Moore doubters and I was one, through two games he has been excellent. Has he made a jump? Well, he will get a test v Chargers.
On one hand they’ve spent back to back picks on OTs to replace their crappy tackles. Traded up for one they were so confident in.
On the other, they can’t get their crappy tackle off the field despite the fact they’ve burned two first rounders on OTs these past two years to replace crappy tackle.
Next time this staff sees a college player that is raw but with physical abilities they should check themselves and recognize they are best taking players that pretty much already know what they are doing.
That fruit either has juice or it doesn’t. They aren’t getting much out of anyone that wasnt already there.
At least Jones isn’t posting videos of cats being tossed to their death out of windows.
So there that.
If they can’t see whatever it is the “plan” with this kid is, it ain’t working. Time to shift gears here.

The Steelers defense has been so impenetrable this season, you knew that it was going to take more than a jackpot deep ball for the Broncos offense to get onto the board.Steel Bingo wrote: ↑Tue Sep 17, 2024 1:06 amDenver looked like it was about to score after a big play yesterday, and the defense responded by creating a turnover.
So far Omar Khan and Andy Weidl's off-season addtions have been stellar. Winning football from Justin Fields, big plays from DeShon Elliott, super play from the rookie lineman Zach Frazier and Troy Fautanu, Payton Wilson has pitched in. The Pittsburgh arrow is firmly pointed upwards.

Just popping in for a quick check on my nihilist brethren. Good to be 2-0, early leader in the AFC North, and up 2 games on the hated Ratbirds and Bungles. Nice to see lots of good points in this post. Too few and too far between but I’ll take it.VeritasSteel wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2024 7:28 pmWe are 2-0, after two road games in which we are in little danger of losing, and first in the division.
Your hypothesis is that Wilson and Semu are going to magically cause this offense to score more points?VeritasSteel wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2024 8:16 pmKC gets you into a passing war in which they have the offensive and defensive advantage. But you see what happened when Baltimore wore them down pounding the ball in the first half and suddenly the Chiefs had no pass rush or run defense after the third. The Ravens went down the field with ease in the fourth.Deebo wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2024 7:38 pm
And this is the problem right here. Tomlin believes there is only 1 way (winning turnover battle) to win football games and other people are following along blindly.

The real issue is that Queen and his contract are keeping Logan Wilson off the field.Charles Demarr wrote: ↑Mon Sep 16, 2024 11:42 amGreat post, especially #5.
A lot of money for someone being outplayed by Elandon Roberts.
