If the name of the game as some say is to create mismatches with units @SteelerDayTrader, our Red Zone offense should be unstoppable.
Perhaps we are seeing the start of this? With these rushing TDs from Fields which will continue unless they go to a spy or super disciplined Edge, it will provide opportunities for others. His speed to the corner can't be matched by most teams. Even if they can, they must be perfect angles. If Fields can execute 2-3 passes blindfolded (due to practice and drills), we should have an unstoppable red zone offense.
Split the field in two in the RZ and we should have one side with 5 and one side with 6. Put a man in motion to drag that 6th guy out and you can get it to at least 5.5 to 5.5 players on paper, and maybe even get to work on 5 players depending on the defense.
Justin Fields definitely requires 2 players to contain/stop his RPO threat due to his elite speed, which should make the Edge vulnerable. George Pickens definitely requires 2 people especially in a Red Zone situation due to his speed, height, hands, and body control, but only with an accurate passer. I also think with Washington's size requires 2 people too.
So with Pickens out wide on the strong side, and I'd put Muth out there with him too. Washington as the TE to set the strong side with Pickens. Single back formation from shotgun. Have Muth go in motion to hopefully drag someone or shift the defense to the weakside of the field. Muth could motion to the slot for an emergency relief valve or keep going to the weak side receiver.
Snap the ball and start to roll JF to the strong side. Maybe do play action. Look for a shovel pass option on the Edge with Warren or Harris every time. Keep rolling, look for Washington with a skinny post or a short curl with a strong basketball post up move and a fastball from Fields. Keep rolling and look for Pickens in the corner for a 10' high laser pass, with enough green to get pushed when he jumps. Or JF keeps rolling to the sideline/end zone.
I just don't see how you can stop this Red Zone trio, because you have 3 players that take up 2 people if we are being honest. That is 6 people tied up with 3 Steelers.
- Fields: Edge has to absolutely set the edge with Fields, or they have to put a spy on him. IMLB won't have the speed. Secondary...go right ahead.
- Washington: He is too big. Get him the ball after 3 yards and you will have 8 when he falls. Will the IMLB be spying Fields or covering Washington? IMLB can't cover Washington. You could also run this with TE opposite Pickens, and just run an immediate Drag to Picken's side to provide shadow receiver for Fields' roll-out
- Pickens: Pickens will keep the secondary from cheating, especially if he is by himself...just sprint to the corner, and 2 or 3 secondary members will be shifting. Throw it high and make it automatic.
Thoughts?
