This is incriminating stuff from Teryl Austin. Per
@WilliamsonNFL
:
#Ravens used 11-personnel just 11% of the time vs. #Steelers
Ravens used a 6th OL 22.2% of the time vs. Steelers (and often 300-pound FB Patrick Ricard)
Steelers played nickel 45% (!) of the time vs. Ravens
With 3 DBs on field, Steelers allowed 3.8 Y/P
With 4 DBs on field, Steelers allowed 4.2 Y/P
With 5 DBs on field, Steelers allowed 9.5 Y/P
Bunch of little guys taking on a bunch of big guys. What did they think was going to happen?

Reminds me of the time Kevin Butler was talking about what a threat Tyler Eifert would be in the passing game right before a Bengals game, when Eifert had been on IR for several weeks and would not be playing. There's probably less pressure to get into details when you're DC in name only.

Austin and Tomlin are an embarrassment on the defense side. Art need to hire a Top DC and let him coach
Yeah, it's shame our HC only hire complete dumbasses who will easily become his yes men!steelmann58 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 15, 2025 8:06 pmAustin and Tomlin are an embarrassment on the defense side. Art need to hire a Top DC and let him coach
On November 12, 2018, Teryl Austin was relieved of his duties as defensive coordinator after the Bengals defense became the first in NFL history to give up 500+ yards in 3 straight games against the Kansas City Chiefs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and New Orleans Saints, respectively.

On January 17, 2025, Teryl Austin was relieved of his duties as defensive coordinator after the Steelers defense became the first in NFL history to give up over 1 zillion yards in offense during his last 3 seasons for the Steelers. Mike Tomlin was unavailable for comment. Mr. Rooney was asked for comment, his response: "Ask Mike"

I posted this back a few days ago. It's criminal not to see the other team in constant six Olineman formations with Ricard as another Olineman -- and STILL keep trotting out nickel.
Austin at times looks as clueless at the LA Mayor. (No no I'm not politicizing anything here...I think everyone agrees she's a moron.)
So not only does Austin get schematics wrong, but his defense is in a CONSTANT state of confusion. The amount of miscommunications on the back end of his defense over the last few years easily is numbered in the 100s. They have no clue where they should be.
Communication is the FUNDAMENTAL element of coaching and he can't get that right. It's a disgrace.

Why. Do. People. Pretend. That. Austin. Runs. The. Defense.
I do not get this. I just went on a rant elsewhere on the same topic. It wasn't Austin who didn't know what the fuck he was doing. It was Mike Tomlin.
You are all falling for Tomlin's trap when you sit here and lampoon his defensive coordinators. I know most you hate Tomlin and want him gone anyway, but the reason he has a defensive coordinator and refuses to admit he calls the play is because he doesn't want the responsibility for his own fuck-ups.
The standard answer he gives on this subject is he won't discuss their "division of labor." Nothing and I mean nothing shows how fragile his fucking ego is that he won't just admit he calls the defense. I can't think of a single other head coach play caller who refuses to acknowledge they call the fucking plays and I can't imagine any defensive coordinator worth a damn putting up with it.
Austin is a yes-man in his position because he has no other better options. He's there to be the whipping boy come January when Mike Tomlin fucks things up again. And you all fall for it by blaming him instead of the guy who is actually responsible for the defense.
This isn't speculative like me blaming MIke for the offensive woes. This is shit confirmed by Keith Butler and Dick Lebeau now along with a shit ton of media reports on the subject.
Stop falling for it. Point the finger at the guy who actually calls and designs the defense and gameplans.

Why didn't the defense mastermind figure this out?
Does he not talk to his underlings as well as his first round picks? Just sits around in his office coming up with cliches?

Not disagreeing with your post above, I just think of it as him chiming in on 3rd downs or certain red zone calls.
It is one and the same with me. Austin is a loser if he let himself get in this situation and Tomlin is a loser if he can’t delegate and trust.

Why would it be anymore difficult logistically for Tomlin than any other head coach play caller?

They are both losers. No reason to even bother with including the word “if” any longer.Austin is a loser if he let himself get in this situation and Tomlin is a loser if he can’t delegate and trust.
Dumb as shit and stubborn as fuck.
Tomlin was at "his best" when he had BA and Dick LeBeau as his coordinators. Let Smith run the offense and hire the Jets fired head coach (don't know how to spell it) run the defense.
Even then, it's DEFINITELY Tomlin's scheme and gameplan.
And if Tomlin wasn't calling all or most of the plays, even in big games, he'd certainly be capable.
But there's no absolving Tomlin of at least 90% of the blame here. Also jives with what most of us have observed, which is his schemes largely rely on individual efforts of studs like TJ and Cam. So you get to the playoffs with well-coached teams and talent, and they gameplan to neutralize the studs. Tomlin has no answer and his defense gets stomped.
It also seems like Tomlin has gotten more conservative over the years, on both sides of the ball. He's never understood that when you strip out risk, you also strip out upside. He unknowingly restricts the potential of his players, which again makes it rather easy for elite teams to neutralize guys. It's not quite "knowing the answers to the test", but it's a lot easier to prepare when you know the questions. Perhaps a distinction without a difference.
The only satisfaction I get from Tomlin's continued employment is seeing the shine wear off that hopefully keeps him out of the HOF.
They ever consider ...
If they insisted on going nickel vs those offensive formations...
Did they consider P. Wilson as the nickel LB spying Lamar?
With 6 OL formation and a Hummer sized FB...
You NEED at least 3 down linemen.
If they insist on 2 DL...
..................Minka............Elliott...............
Jackson .........................................Porter
,...............Wilson spying....
....,................Queen...... Elandon.............
Highsmith.......Cam and Benton........TJ
And with Baltimore not running many 3 wr sets.....
Both Wilson and Elliott could have been up tight,
Spying Lamar, shooting into backfield.
OR.
Just do the same thing. Play after play

Austin has one slightly larger but not even close to letter size. Maybe 5x7 ?
Have been wondering about this for some time. Tomlin doesn’t hold a play sheet, he probably thinks it’s easy to memorize an index card of defensive plays he designed.
Our goal for the next D coordinator should be at least a standard size 8 1/2 x 11.beerbrother wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2025 1:47 amDid you ever notice how Butler’s play-sheet was like the size of a 3x5 index card.LakecrestSteeler wrote: ↑Fri Jan 17, 2025 4:31 pmBecause he doesn’t have a sheet. I mean it would be efficient with the copy machine too.
