I really see this as Tomlin's going to be all about adding a QB to this glorious team I have that can win a SB if it only gets this one piece, and Wiedl being more like my thinking of: no point in adding a bad QB when you still have a long ways to go in building the team, especially the trenches.
MOST fans of the Steelers are probably desperate (I'm not)
Omar Khan might be desperate since he holds the GM "title."
Uncle Artie might be mildly desperate fi he wants to keep coaching in the NFL (it's not a money thing with daddy being a billionaire)
Deuce is in a coma-like stupor so we know he's not "desperate"
Yep, Tomlin SHOULD be desperate, but I promise you he's not (NHALS not ending a priority but not a stressor)
If anyone can be PATIENT it's Tomlin (the whole more job security than the pope thing).
If he were desperate HE wouldn't have low-balled Justin Fields and Sam Darnold.
Desperate isn't offering Aaron Rodgers a contract, it's just the cold reality that there's nothing else out there.
It's the same tired story in the NFL, too many teams/not nearly enough QB talent.
Desperate is probably overstating it, but I think it's clear they miscalculated and currently are stuck in a bit of a rut. I think they were obviously soured on Russ, wanted to bring back Fields to give him a prove-it year as starter, but did the usual Steelers thing of not guaranteeing enough money + miscalculated in that Fields actually preferred to go somewhere else rather than come back.
I think some of Cam's recent comments of "either you want to be a Steeler or you don't" kind of speak to that frustration that is being felt.
Tomlin knows who Mason Rudolph is. He doesn't want 17 games of that. And they clearly don't want Russ back and if they do bring him back at this point then yeah that's definitely desperation. They couldn't make it more clear that Russ is the last option. The flirty fatty at the bar who smells like she doesn't wipe well enough, or worse, wipes back to front.
But I think Steelers fans aren't appreciating how likely either their first or third round pick is going to be a QB. If I were a betting man I'd definitely lean that way at this point. Tomlin can't have any patience and wait on what should be a very nice QB class next year. He's going to push to get a guy early this draft and will probably set us back another 2-3 years like they did with Pickett.
