Re: Darnell Washington
I just think we have a fundamental difference because @tbsteel thinks Washington is lumbering and I think he covers just as much ground as Freiermuth-- just looks different doing it. Washington is less lumbering than Matt Spaeth, for example, and probably less so than Mark Breuner.
Larry Donnell is at least something comparable-- great blocker who made plays during the stretch of his career where he was a go-to guy.

I don't recall whether it was Frieremuth's rookie or second year, but there was a pre-season game where Ben hit him for 2 TDs.
One up the seam and the second in the back of the EZ.
I was geeked. The team was going to have a real weapon at TE, again.
In the half dozen or so years since, we have seen the utilization of the TE, either up the seam or in the back of the end zone, all of
are you ready...
Zero times.
Now, it's possible that I'm missing one or two throws, over the past 6 years- but none come to mind.
So, whether Frieremuth, Washington, or Smith, there is no realistic expectation that they will be properly utilized.
Is that the TE coach, the OC, or Tomlin??
I'm leaning Tomlin, since it's been that way since Heath and Speath departed... (and I'd argue their usage was more a function of Ben than play design.)
Anyway- this coaching staff has to lead the league in under utilizing players, in addition to their propensity to regress them.

I got a kick out of all the analysts talking about how the Steelers could do such unique things with their 3 TE sets and really dictate to defenses. None of that was ever going to happen.
But right now, there hasn't been enough plays run or efficiency in the offense in general to produce big numbers for any pass catcher.

I mean, there's a fair point re: perception vs. reality of how a bigger guy will cover more ground.bradshaw2ben wrote: ↑Tue Sep 30, 2025 4:26 pmI just think we have a fundamental difference because @tbsteel thinks Washington is lumbering and I think he covers just as much ground as Freiermuth-- just looks different doing it. I just am very skeptical at this point. The guy barely caught passes at Georgia and in Pittsburgh it's the same story. If he's going to be a factor, time is a ticking.
Hey, anything that gets Fry Daddy off the field I'm in favor of. I think I read that Pat had 15 offensive snaps this past week? Hopefully that's a trend and not an outlier (as opposed to another Outlier lol).
*roots for losses*
I instantly thought Malkin after your 2nd sentence, too.bradshaw2ben wrote: ↑Sun Sep 28, 2025 10:27 pmYou're wrong about this. He looks slow because he's huge. Everyone thinks big guys are slow and or lazy but then you realize how much ground they cover. Malkin in his prime or Ben are examples of this that should be familiar.tbsteel wrote: ↑Sun Sep 28, 2025 9:06 pmBecause he's a tackle playing TE? I guess on the positive side, the Steelers are 3-1 and have got very little from Outlier, Fry Daddy, Kaleb Johnson and Roman Wilson.
Any word on Calvin Austin? Don't like he left the game and didn't return.

It’s beyond pathetic this team pays a guy top money at his position as if he’s a top performer at his position then proceeds to literally ignore him as a major part of the offense.
Any Joe fucking McScrubbins can give you what they ask of Muth.
Easily.
Only in Pittsburgh do they panic over losing a guy, pay him a premium to stay, and then have zero plan how to get a return on that investment while actually having Connor fucking Heyward on the field during the first offensive series in Ireland.
I’d love to be a fly on the wall during an offensive (literally) meeting.
Pathetic how this team is being run.

Jibba Jabber’s offense hasn’t scored more than 7 1st quarter points in 81 consecutive games. An NFL record by far. A historic amount of “easin in”. We are lucky to have him.
Connor is a very Irish sounding name. 4D chess.

I believe what happened was similar, but not nearly as bad as Tyreek HIll's season ender last night.Ice wrote: ↑Wed Oct 01, 2025 1:16 amWhat I read was Austin thought he was fine, so maybe the early bye worked out here?K_C_ wrote: ↑Sun Sep 28, 2025 9:07 pmit's ridiculous and Freiermuth literally looks like he's checked out.Works At A Bank wrote: ↑Sun Sep 28, 2025 8:56 pmHow in TF do the Steelers have a 6’7 TE that can catch but has only been targeted 4 times in 4 games. CAIII was reassuring the fans that; "I'm good" even though he is most definitely going to miss several weeks.
I've read it's pretty much a certainty both Austin and Ramsey will miss at least 6 weeks.

Good. Let’s see what Roman Wilson has.
Let’s use our $50 million TE more.
Let’s you know, run some offense.
We play the most scared chickenshit version of football in the league.
Everything geared towards not exposing his precious and highly overpaid paper tiger defense.
This cunt is a fraud squared.
Fooled soooooo many for oh so long.
Myself included.

What I'm saying: it's an optical illusion. He's bigger, therefore his covering of distance looks slower.jebrick wrote: ↑Tue Sep 30, 2025 5:38 pmWashington is just slow to get moving but one moving he look good.bradshaw2ben wrote: ↑Tue Sep 30, 2025 4:26 pmI just think we have a fundamental difference because @tbsteel thinks Washington is lumbering and I think he covers just as much ground as Freiermuth-- just looks different doing it. 1.61 10 yard is better than Hockenson or Jonnu Smith
If he were a little guy covering that same ground, he'd look shot out of a cannon.
But the defender has to cover the distance, reagardless of how it looks to the eye on TV. I guarantee you if you were covering him you'd feel the speed.
Sheesh. Particularly with Ramsey. When's Porter back?K_C_ wrote: ↑Wed Oct 01, 2025 1:55 amI believe what happened was similar, but not nearly as bad as Tyreek HIll's season ender last night.Ice wrote: ↑Wed Oct 01, 2025 1:16 amWhat I read was Austin thought he was fine, so maybe the early bye worked out here?K_C_ wrote: ↑Sun Sep 28, 2025 9:07 pm

Not that either of them necessarily replace Ramsey‘s ability, but it’s definitely an improvement over putting James Pierre on the field

You know Pierre gets a lot of shit here and at times it's warranted but we could do a lot worse than that dude and have in the past.anpsteel wrote: ↑Wed Oct 01, 2025 12:34 pmThey are in indicating Porter will play after the buy and I believe Cory Trice is back as wellIce wrote: ↑Wed Oct 01, 2025 11:43 amSheesh. Pierre is not a bad back up corner overall. I really wish that game ending INT had held up (and probably should have.)
Dude made an unbelievable play and I wish he could have gotten credit for it.

Pierre definitely did alright in spot duty last week, but the depth of having Porter and Trice (until he gets injured again) is going to be helpful against those Bungles receivers, no matter what schlub is throwing to them, and we have a bad habit of losing to schlubs. Hell, we almost did it last week.

I like Pierre
He's a good back up (as your number 4 or 5 CB) and good special teamer- but that doesn't mean you want him starting.
Moving that #4-5 position to #2-3 creates opportunity for a good opponent.
That being said, he looks like he's improving - which is a rarity on this team. During pre-season and what we've seen so far this year, looks like he's getting better.
Clearly this is based upon very limited info- as I don't watch the All 22 and we only see what the corners are doing when they are being targeted.

Except #83 in that pic isn’t actually a TE, he just identifies as one.

This reminds me of every picture I’ve ever taken with a fish. Hold it closer to the camera and it looks way bigger.
