Steelers: the worst HC vacancy in the NFL?
Ravens obviously are the #1 HC job. Steelers might be the worst - inheriting a team with no QB of the future, historically expensive and old ass defense, cupboards bare of talent. 21st pick in the draft...
Talk about a shit job. Only thing going for the Steelers is the "prestige" of the franchise, if any of that remains.

They have the 4th most draft assets and the new guy can come in like Cowher did and clean house of worthless players. Just not being Mike Tomlin earns the new guy 2 years of goodwill.TimmayLake wrote: ↑Tue Jan 13, 2026 7:15 pmRavens obviously are the #1 HC job. Any good coach would want to come here because he knows it’s a minimum 10 year job.

It will take 5 years to even get this team back to contending for the AFCN.Steelperch wrote: ↑Tue Jan 13, 2026 7:19 pmThey have the 4th most draft assets and the new guy can come in like Cowher did and clean house of worthless players. I don't buy the Ravens as the best job for several reasons.TimmayLake wrote: ↑Tue Jan 13, 2026 7:15 pmRavens obviously are the #1 HC job. Outside of Lamar and KH their roster is as big a mess as Steelers plus? They will have major cap issues going forward. Also, Lamar is 29 and the history of dual threat QBs strongly suggests he is already on the decline. Even when healthy he looked considerably less explosive in open field this season. I'm betting that gets steadily worse.
The cap issues mean Ravens will have to choose between best DL (Travis Jones) and their pro bowl center. It also means that one of their biggest issues can't be addressed in FA: pass rush.
The best job? I think it is Washington, less pressure and expectations. Young Qb that if returns to rookie form can be built around on a rookie contract. Eagles fading, Cowboys a mess and Giants are still a huge question mark.

While BAL will probably hire a good coach, BAL just isn't that talented (especially on defense) and Lamar's running days are nearing an end.TimmayLake wrote: ↑Tue Jan 13, 2026 7:22 pmIt will take 5 years to even get this team back to contending for the AFCN.
CLE sucks and Burrow can't stay healthy.
New guy could win 7 games with this roster and win the AFCN next year.

Perfectly put. Someone gets to come into a job where they'll have stability. Clear out the roster. Draft their desired QB rather than inheriting.Steelperch wrote: ↑Tue Jan 13, 2026 7:19 pmThey have the 4th most draft assets and the new guy can come in like Cowher did and clean house of worthless players. You're inheriting Pope-level job security. I'd argue it's currently the best on the market.

basically guaranteed time to rebuild the roster and implement plans that aren't "win NOW"... which coach wouldn't LOVE the time to properly build a team?ol skool wrote: ↑Tue Jan 13, 2026 7:45 pmThisSteelperch wrote: ↑Tue Jan 13, 2026 7:19 pmThey have the 4th most draft assets and the new guy can come in like Cowher did and clean house of worthless players. This. Ravens have F all pass rush and without Madbuike (looks like career ending injury) a mediocre dline. At CB, Wiggins is decent but I'd rather have JP Jr. Roquan fell off a cliff this season. Ton of holes on that defense..Kodiak wrote: ↑Tue Jan 13, 2026 7:42 pmWhile BAL will probably hire a good coach, BAL just isn't that talented (especially on defense) and Lamar's running days are nearing an end.TimmayLake wrote: ↑Tue Jan 13, 2026 7:22 pmIt will take 5 years to even get this team back to contending for the AFCN.

Offense, mediocre RT, trash OGs, great center and a serviceable LT (if he can stay healthy) that is costing them a good chunk of change. WRs, Flowers is as boom or bust as it gets. One game goes for 130 and 2 TDs, the next vanishes. He is not a #1 WR and the rest of the WRs are crap.
TE used to be a position of real strength, however, Andrews (big contract) had a poor season and Likely is going to get paid in FA. RB, Mitchell nice change of pace but no more than that and yes at some point Henry will slow down. Already saw glimpses of that with his ball security issues at various points in the season.
I don’t buy that the ravens are necessarily the best job
I think Lamar Jackson is part of the problem

Why would it take 5 years? The AFCN is a dumpster fire. Besides, it doesn't take 5 years to rebuild.TimmayLake wrote: ↑Tue Jan 13, 2026 7:22 pmIt will take 5 years to even get this team back to contending for the AFCN.Steelperch wrote: ↑Tue Jan 13, 2026 7:19 pmThey have the 4th most draft assets and the new guy can come in like Cowher did and clean house of worthless players. I'd say the Giants are up there as one of the best jobs, with the exception that maybe the GM should have been fired too.
But...Jaxon Dart shows promise, they have high draft picks, their defense is pretty good, and their ownership is pretty solid as well.

Except their QB has a head full of pudding and won't avoid unnecessary hits.
Mike Tomlin: Bringing mediocrity to the 'Burgh for over a decade.

Are you kidding, it's the most secure coaching position in all of sports!
Choose wisely Deuce.
I'll gladly write off '26 as a rebuild and accept 4-13 as part of the deal if we can clean house.
First order of business is getting rid of Khan, DK, TJ.

Same had been said about just about every young QB. That is something that can be mitigated by good coaching. Giants look like a team that if they stay healthy, make a few decent FA signings and have a good draft? Could be competing for playoffs straight away. I realize Carter didn't rack up sacks but his pressure rate was top 3 in the NFL. The sacks will come. Giants D is a few pieces from being legit. Giants get a WR to go with Nabors and that nice RB 1/2 punch, not a bad offense.StillMadAtSlobber wrote: ↑Tue Jan 13, 2026 8:09 pmExcept their QB has a head full of pudding and won't avoid unnecessary hits.
I actually think it is a more tempting job than Ravens or Steelers.

Something to keep an eye on….
Chris Mara Had Informal Meeting With John Harbaugh.

I think that would be the wrong hire. Giants need a coach that can develop Dart and an offense around him. Harbaugh is not that guy and he is unlikely to bring in an OC to do that for Dart.Steelafan77 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 13, 2026 8:50 pmSomething to keep an eye on….

I know some may it see it differently but Harbaugh was a worse coach than Tomlin. If he hadn't have lucked into Lamar, he would've been fired. Lamar saved his job, then Harbaugh spent the next 9 seasons finding ways to mess up a great roster. Giving up double digit leads, losing to teams (like the Steelers) he shouldn't have been and not giving a HOF RB the rock when he was crushing teams.
I 100% believe had Harbaugh been fired after losing AFCCG to the Chiefs at home, and Mike McDonald been given the job? Ravens have at least one SB and maybe more.
Harbaugh is going to Miami. His brother is close with Stephen Ross (UM connection)Steelafan77 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 13, 2026 8:50 pmSomething to keep an eye on….

no accountability. no expectations.

This is the premier HC job in all of football. It has nothing to do with the roster. Where is a coach going to go and get more security and support than the Pittsburgh Steelers? They should be able to get the top candidate out there. Will they be smart enough to get that guy? Either way I'm just thankful I have hope again.
Howard Griffith had to resort to chop-blocking him during the 1997 AFC Championship Game. An incredulous Kirkland asked Griffith, “Why do you have to use cheap tactics like chop-blocking?” Griffith replied “Why do you have to be a 300-pound linebacker?”

I agree. Nobody really knows how much skill is involved with drafting versus turning people into genius drafters with a good organization, capable of catalyzing the draft picks into AllPros and HOFs.StillerInCT wrote: ↑Tue Jan 13, 2026 7:52 pmWhy would it take 5 years? If you assemble all the eligible college football players it is a bit of shooting fish in a barrel during the draft. It isn’t that hard to get to .500.
If we pick a good coach, Inthink will get a sizable bump, and you will see talent materialize out of thin air from strange places including our own backyard.
