Re: Steeler known interview lists
We’re up to 7 interviews, 6 DCs and a passing game coordinator. Not a single OC so far. Rooney gonna Rooney.
it can still work if its like Cowher with Arians

Not really. If you hire a good young OC he will get a HC job in 2 years tops. The only your way works is if your OC previously failed as a HC and now nobody wants to steal them away. Securing your offense via HC is the clear path forward for anyone who has been paying attention which is why Rooney interviews all DCs. Maybe Shula could work if he has a connection to some offensive minds through the MCVay tree.
I’d take a shot at getting Scheelhausse as HC and Flores as DC/ assistant HC. That way Flores controls the D and can guide the young coach a bit.
scheelhaasse seems too young and inexperienced.
if it happens, i can see rooney picking his coaching staff.
do we really need that to happen?
i’d rule out a white guy.

The league goes in cycles and swings back-and-forth. So it COULD actually be forward-thinking looking for innovation on the defensive side of the ball.Steelperch wrote: ↑Thu Jan 15, 2026 7:03 pmSecuring your offense via HC is the clear path forward for anyone who has been paying attention which is why Rooney interviews all DCs.
Only thing is I'm not sure if the rules will ever allow for team to win with defense again.
We're also getting to the point where some of these offensive-minded HCs will start getting fired (like McDaniels), so there could be plenty of OC talent to be hired.
I just have a feeling this league-wide trend toward offense has been happening for at least 10-15 years and we might be coming late to the game when things are already turning.

The fucking league is completely slanted towards the offense and will only get more extreme. Problem is, very few of them fit the Rooney rule. How about Randel El? He was the OC this year right? Under a great HC. Would love to see it be a former Steeler SB winner too. Wish it could be someone like Mike LaFleur or Kubiak but I'm not getting my hopes up. Tomlin is gone. A second miracle this year would be too much to ask for.
I believe Randle El is the wide receivers coach and assistant head coach for the Chicago Bears

I wonder who the Giants brought in under the Rooney Rule...franco32 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 15, 2026 3:51 amThe Rooney Rule doesn't mean we have to hire a minority candidate. It just means you have to have one on your slate of candidates. I believe we have 3 out of 5 so far so we are good. Now, keep setting up interviews and hire the best candidate. Right now that is Shula.RemoAZ wrote: ↑Thu Jan 15, 2026 3:21 amFuck this defensive shit. We've been through that. Need an offensive mind. You know cables had a pretty dang good W-L record, considering he lost Tyreek and had to deal with Tua. My guess is he’ll get another shot somewhere eventually..Kodiak wrote: ↑Thu Jan 15, 2026 7:25 pmThe league goes in cycles and swings back-and-forth. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootba ... jiro-everoThe Steelers have added another name to the list of candidates to succeed Mike Tomlin as their head coach.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that they have requested an interview with Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero.
Evero has spent the last three seasons running the defense for Carolina and he was the Broncos’ coordinator in 2022. His name has come up in conjunction with several head coaching searches in recent seasons, including those being conducted by the Falcons and Raiders this month.
The Steelers have requested interviews with a number of coaches since Tomlin stepped down earlier this week. Team owner Art Rooney II said on Wednesday that he will not be putting an exact time frame on how long he’d like the process to take.
The Panthers only had 2 INTS and 30 sacks this year.
I only recognize a few names on that depth chart.
They were 29th in points allowed in 2023
They gave up the most points in the NFL in 2024
Down to 15th in 2025

Basically what we need is one of these coaches to LIE to Rooney and say that they want to just keep the status quo. Then once in there, they blow the sh*t up and start entering us into the year 2026.

This is an interesting one because I don't think Klay has been on people's radar. (Klint has). Klay has been OC only a year but worked miracles with an injury-plagued team.Greeksteel wrote: ↑Fri Jan 16, 2026 1:05 amDianna Russini

Looking at offense is certainly heartening.
I too think the Kubiaks are top candidates.
With the Seahawks one a preference...
He did a great job with Darnald.
Klint was also OC with Vikings one year, which waz Cousins last pretty good year
Tho Klay absorbing Shanahan brain waves is a plus too.
These two have been breathing and been around NFL football their whole lives

I asked the same thing and I can’t find an answer.
Harbaugh went on the market and the Giants went after him hard. As far as I can tell he was their only candidate.
I’m sure no one will say anything. Just like when the Pats hired Vrabel. They will make someone up if they have to.

I think it would be great if they signaled a new coach with gold smoke.
I would look at Rodgers as QB coach/emergency QB and he'd have to agree not to start.
Consider it the ultimate load management protocol.
