RIP Bill Maz
https://triblive.com/sports/bill-mazero ... ies-at-89/
Just yesterday had him on my all-time Pittsburgh top 10 athlete list.

I am numb. Just too many now. Not Maz.
Greatest home run ever hit in a World Series. Greatest defensive 2nd baseman all time. No one could turn a double play like Maz. And don't even try to take him out. Spikes? No way. Not going anywhere and the back runner is out by a mile.
RIP, Maz. Great ballplayer, decent man. Bless Maz and all who loved and admired him.

Would love to, MJG...can't do beers anymore for medical reasons but can still bullshit with the best of em. lol !!
Among the greatest defensive middle infielders of all time.
And he’s still the only guy to do the thing we all dreamed about: hit a Game 7 walkoff HR to win it.
You see these Top 10 lists on ESPN and such, and I swear to you, every one I saw put Maz at #2 and that Kirk Gibson one at #1. Would piss me off to no end. There’s no comparing to a Game 7 walkoff HR. Period.

That World Series was insane.
The Yankees outscored the Pirates by more than 2-1 and lost.

Line from The Bronx Tale. Kid says to his dad, played by Robert Deniro...family are Yankee fans....
"I Hate Bill Mazeroski. He made Mickey Mantle cry."
Other thing about that game 7....there were ZERO strikeouts!!

So sad to hear the news about the great Bill Mazeroski. Nothing really to add to the sentiments expressed on this thread here except:
1. Maz was arguably the greatest defensive second baseman in the history of MLB. All-around, he's not even close to Rogers Hornsby, Joe Morgan, Charlie Gehringer, Jackie Robinson or Nap Lajoie, but he was the human vacuum cleaner at second base.
2. Maz's home run is the greatest home run in MLB history. A Game 7 walk off home run to win the World Series in Pittsburgh. Never been done before or since. Also, still the last time a Pittsburgh team won a championship in Pittsburgh.
3. Maz's home run is the greatest moment in Pittsburgh sports history. Bigger than the Immaculate Reception, the Steelers' victory in Oakland in the '74 AFCCG, the Immaculate Interception, Ben to Santonio and any Penguins or Panthers moment you care to pick.

Well said, brother. Man. I am a bit torn up. It truly was the biggest thing ever and as the years have piled up, it feels bigger than it even was for those of us who were blessed to witness it. Damn.Obviously wrote: ↑Sun Feb 22, 2026 12:10 pmSo sad to hear the news about the great Bill Mazeroski. Nothing really to add to the sentiments expressed on this thread here except:

i was a 10 year old 5th grader at St. Francis Xavier Elementary School on the North Side the day Maz hit his legendary homer. The school principal, Sister Fabian, had specifically told us the day before that we were not permitted to bring transistor radios to school to listen to the game. Several of us, of course, ignored her and brought our transistor radios anyway and listened to the game as discreetly as we could. All through the game, kids were whispering to me "What's the score?". At the end of the 8th inning, Sister Fabian came into our classroom and told our classroom teacher that the score was 9 to 9 and she was putting the game on the intercom. We all know what happened next. In the 65 years since then, I've talked to dozens of people who met him at events, played golf with him etc. Not a one of them had a negative word to say about the guy. They all told me he was a nice guy who didn't allow celebrity to go to his head. RIP MAZ.

I have no memory of it because I was too young but I heard about it so much that the legend probably beats any real memory.
Hal Smith should have been the eighth inning hero but the Yanks scored two in the ninth to tie 9-9 to set up Maz's great moment.
