They're going to use Coates in the slot. Blocker and YAC guy.

Forget who it was that made the comment yesterday but it was said that Coates will have to be tied to the jugs machine in camp. I laughed at that one.
An old boss of mine has a son that plays WR for Auburn and I asked him what he thought of Coates (he has been to every Auburn game for the past 4 years). He said:
Coates is a freak of nature describing his athleticism. He had the highest drop rate in the SEC and second highest in the NCAA. He called him one dimensional but believes that was more of a product of the system he played in with Coach Malzahn. He believes that Coates is very coachable and has great ability to be used in different roles/packages.

Coates will have an easier time hanging on to passes thrown to him by an All-Pro NFL QB than he did with balls thrown by a CB, I'd imagine.

Nice to see Coates bring his son to work with him today.

Mighty mouse is going to bring it. I'm excited. I wanted Nelson or Golson if we went OLB in R1. He's short, no denying it, but man, the SEC tape looks good. A different level of competition in the NFL, but am happy we drafted a bonafide ball hawk. Christ he looks short next to Coates.

The Sweed thing about Coates is he will make the remarkable catch...and drop 2 easy balls in the same game.
He plays as physical as he looks though.

That Coates story is a good one.
Seems like this draft is full of smart, high character, try hard guys.

If Coates is truly 6'2", the Golson is definitely closer to 5'8" than 5'9".
And he doesn't look all THAT solid in the picture either.
Yikes! I hope he does have the physicality I saw in some of the highlight reels.
PS I guess since they keep showing the Coates burning Golson highlight reel, that you can truly say Coates is Golson's "daddy".

Hope Golson ends up a great player, but his size is going to be a tremendous roadblock to him ever being anything more than a slot corner.
Round 2 is pretty early to take a permanent slot corner, in my book.

The Coates v Golson camp battles should be fun to watch. I see a camp scuffle (in a good way... not a Blount jumping in way) in their near future. And I won't be surprised if the much larger Coates has a real hard time putting Golson on his ass.

Welcome to Steeler Nation, Kenzie- you're gonna fit right in.

Add in Bryant, Wheaton (Who I still think has a role) and now Coates. Going to be hard to defend this team if the guys play up to potential.
I still don't see anyone who will be tough down at the goal line in space, so I still have a concern we will have a hard time converting all those yards we get into points.
But we shall see.

I love James but it will still take time and seasoning for him.
And I can't be sure but I Kay have written that post before James was drafted.
But if James can be that red zone target, then excellent.

I don't see why Coates can't be developed into a RZ/EZ threat. Tall, fast, and built thick. He's no twig. His bench press is no joke, either.

Coates burning Golson in the first highlight of this clip.

Video wouldn't play for me, but is that the one where Golson thought he was going to have safety help? He takes the blame, but says he thought he was going to get help over the top, if it's the clip I'm thinking of.

Coates was one of the top WRs at the combine is practically every measurable. Despite the drops, he is a hands catcher. He's already the most physical WR we have on the roster with the ball in his hands. Bubble screens to him make way more sense than giving to any of the other guys. Once they develop Coates, and I believe they will do it fairly quickly, you'll have two big and fast WR's that can change the game with one play. That also means Antonio Brown sees single coverage and nobody can cover that guy 1 on 1.
If you have 5 minutes watch Coates shred the Alabama secondary and show he's a solid blocker too. There is a bad drop in there, but way more big plays.

it was that play you're thinking of.
Even if it was Golson just getting burned, he wasn't burned because of his size...he was simply burned.
It happens.
Clemson was right- a lot of those TDs to the "bigger receivers" that Golson gave up had little if anything to do with size differential.

Looks like Golson still had the speed to close and was right there when the ball arrived.
It's encouraging.
Jibba Jabber’s offense hasn’t scored more than 7 1st quarter points in 85 consecutive games. An NFL record by far. A historic amount of “easin in”. We are lucky to have him.

Thats one of the things i always look at when seeing WR prospect clips..........
If he is gonna play in the slot...........and in traffic with players on his back or crowded windows.............he needs to be a hands catcher.
As usual...they will keep it simple for the kid............bring him along slowly in spots.
I had the Conley kid from Georgia in my mock............but can't complain since he was off the board 10 picks or so earlier. Could have traded up.........
Excited about the potential of AB, MB, MW and now SC............

I like the idea of Sammie Coates being the Steelers new and improved version of Anquan Boldin. SBI

Not much separates Breshad Perriman from Sammie Coates in my book. I had a pretty similar grade on both (late 1 to mid 2). Both have good height, strength, deep speed, and the occasional drops. Getting Coates 2 rounds later was a steal similar to Martavis Bryant dropping to round 4 last year. Both Coates and Bryant should have been borderline 1st rounders. This is the most talent Ben has ever had to work with.
I like the Coates pick. Wheaton has some talent but I don't really see him ever being viewed as a huge threat.
He looks real good as a #4 though to the point I would love to see Haley incorporate some 4 wide packages.
Especially when you have a back like Bell who can pick-up the blitz as well as slip out for a pass. Or split out wife for a 5 wide look. Or run from 4 wide. Especially if Coats can block. He can clear underneath for the draw.
Either way, Ben has plenty of weapons now. The only thing standing in the way of having if not the best, one of the best offenses in football will be either the oline or Haley/Tomlin over thinking shit and getting in their own way.
And how the hell does Dri get in the field now??

We don't really have a TE who is a coverage mismatch... it will depend on PA and the OL not being overwhelmed by DLs like NYJ and Balt in order for it to score points.

Show me a defensive secondary that isn't mismatched against Brown, Bell, Bryant, Wheaton, and Coates??
So many options with that personnel grouping. Which is why I want to see some 4 wide.
Provided the oline is ready for the big leagues.
Give Brady or Manning these weapons with the type of protection they get and they would shatter whatever records are left to be shattered.

And it will depend on Ben finding the open man and getting it to him.
And of all these guys, someone will be open.
