Since 2013 the Steelers have burnt 3 mid round draft picks on either 1) Ben’s adequate backup or 2) Ben’s heir apparent (not sure which one is which, or what the strategy is behind either approach). It looks to me that Mason may very well be our next starting QB in 3-4 years when Ben hangs it up, but who in the hell knows at this point. Rudolph could develop into starting material and be worthy of trade bait. He could plateau into just a guy, the organization could see him as “non-starter material” and decide to burn more picks on QBs when Ben retires. Who knows.
What sticks in my craw is Rudolph looking adequate means the Jones and Dobbs picks seem even more boneheaded. Either Ben wasn’t up front with the organization about how many years he had left OR the Steelers were just wingin’ it during those mid-round draft days. Sure as hell would have been nice to pick up some legit defensive starters with those picks.
Perhaps you can't look at the pick in a vacuum, but:

Fortunately, this is still all Ben's show for the foreseeable future, and Mason can continue to learn and grow behind a clipboard.
...but he did look poised to step up if needed - way more than Dobbs at the very least...

Seems to me these are the draft misses we should be more concerned about...
