Encouraging but it is only May.
As long as Mikey is at the top it will remain a stone age offense.
As long as Mikey is at the top it will remain a stone age offense.
If nothing else, this is the first hire since Arians that wasn't either nepotism (Haley) or plucked from college (Fichtner / Canada).
I actually disagree unless the Steelers pull off a crazy deal for Aiyuk or DK Metcalf, etc.fractalsteel wrote: ↑Tue May 21, 2024 3:41 pmEncouraging but it is only May.

Arthur Smith knows what he’s doing and realizes he only has one prototypical bigger WR in Pickens. He’s going to have to get speedsters like Roman Wilson and Calvin Austin Jr. involved and I 100% believe he will.
I expect Wilson to be starting opposite Pickens week one and CA3 to get a shitload of snaps.
Art’s gonna have to work with what he has and the pieces are very intriguing.

Well like most things in life, it's relative.
Is Arthur Smith some offensive genius? Certainly not, but compared to the clowns before him he looks like Mike Martz.
So with that in mind, what are reasonable offensive expectations for this team? As an aside, if I were to ask 100 people on the street what was KC's offense ranked in terms of points, my guess is only 5 people would guess near the 15th overall rank

It’s a bit comical that some think that there is something special going on here. There’s a reason Shades hired Artie.

The Steelers had a lot of turnover this year. Unexpected turnover. Khan most certainly isn't Colbert and he might not be done yet.
I get that folks expect a "3 yards and a cloud of dust" type offense from Arthur Smith, but I'm not buying it. While I'm not sure Tomlin's job is on the line, Mikey T. cannot go to the Rooney's and say; "Welp, Kenny didn't work out. We were inexperienced at the QB position so we couldn't win." The Steelers have a proven winner and Super Bowl champion, who still looks to have some tread left on his tires under center.
Mikey T. can't go to the Rooney's and say; "How can you expect me to win with a shitty o-line?" That excuse went bye bye in April. The Steelers added 2 immediate starters on the o-line with their first and second round picks. Their first round pick last season was an offensive tackle. Mikey T. is out of excuses.
Sure, I think Arthur Smith's offense is going to be run heavy, but it shouldn't take long for this o-line to be dominant in the running game and we have 2 very, very good RB's. Najee has warts, but he's a horse and behind this o-line, don't be surprised if he has a 1,500 yard type year.
When you have a dominant o-line and 2 damn good backs, that will open up the passing game in play action......and I'm pretty sure Russell Wilson will have plenty of clean pockets and open receivers to find.
This offense has a purpose. Matt Canada's didn't. Ask Ben Roethlisberger.

This is all hogwash KC! Not what you write, but the Steelers! I get you are trying to reset the season and be positive for 2024, especially with the new picks, but a 500 record or less is on the horizon.K_C_ wrote: ↑Tue May 21, 2024 6:28 pmWe'll see.Jobu wrote: ↑Tue May 21, 2024 6:17 pmI don’t think Tomlin will need to neuter Smith…his offense is nuetered in and of itself.Thrillsseeker wrote: ↑Tue May 21, 2024 6:11 pm

It all goes back to the average fan being able to articulate how the team plays and what the philosophy of each unit is. Every fan could articulate that with Dick Lebeau's defense! Stop the run! Tackle the catch! Don't you dare let the O take the top off the field. That is the sign of a good head coach and/or organization being on top of communication.
With Bettis it was easy...everyone new what the offense was trying to do somewhat. It wasn't all that clear all the time, but when they needed to run they ran. Then with Ben....just keep him clean and give him weapons and he could win!
Now when Tomlin took over you had a couple years of Lebeau to keep the defensive philosophy going, then Ben to keep the offense (somewhat of a philosophy) going...and then it all just evaporated as Lebeau left and Ben aged.
A rudderless ship that not one fan can articulate what the hell the Steelers are doing on Offense or Defense; you know the blurbs to make it look like you know what they are doing! Nobody can say what the hell they are doing...it is all throw spaghetti at the wall and see what sticks! Hell, I doubt many of the players could even articulate the philosophies into an elevator speech! And that my friends is why we need a new coach and continue to rely heavily on heroics and balls to the walls emotion to eke out wins and losses, get critical injuries at critical times, and hover around 500!

I think Tomlin has been given an edict of some kind, to win. I think his excuses, after the moves they've made this offseason, both with the Wilson signing and the draft focusing on the trenches AND hiring a real offensive coordinator, tell me there will be expectations.
Let's remember, Cool Shades has not been extended yet. I think the folks upstairs are getting restless.
I will not go as far as saying Tomlin's job is in danger. That I don't know, but something is up.

I am impressed that Najee dropped significant weight. He actually resembles a RB with movement skills.

Why did he wait so long to do something that would improve his performance?

That’s probably right. Not falling on the sword for it. Nor is it important enough to go find out. On Tuesday, he spoke to the media in the locker room as the team reported for week two of Organized Team Activities (OTAs). Chris Adamski from Trib-Live posted part of his interview on social media. He was asked about Smith's arrival and he made it clear that it is very nice to have a coach who holds his players to a very high standard.
"I think he's made everyone super accountable, which, you know, I think starts with the players, but it's good to have [from the] coaches as well. I think he's been consistent in his message, wants guys to take each day to, you know, be a pro and have to come in with an attitude like, 'What can I do today to prove myself to my teammates?'"
"Tomlin has never appreciated the role of scheme and play call in the ability for player's to execute" Kodiak.

Perhaps we can assume to him that the past regimes haven't had any of that, along with the Pride of New Jersey, Kenny Football.
This could be one of the benefits of having an former HC on a team and not a Coach flunky.
Marginal improvements...

My guess is that he did not have the people opening the holes in front of him and he had to be a battering ram. Or it is a contract season.
