CA III

This dude gets like no love, either from the national media or locally in Pittsburgh, or from the assembled asshats on this esteemed website.

To me, he's produced all year, when healthy, but the presentation is that the Steelers don't have a number two wide.

I also can’t figure out why a guy who is 5th on the team in receptions and 98th in the league in yards doesn’t get more respect. He may be the shortest and lightest starting WR in the NFL and his team just tried like hell to trade for somebody to take his job, but yeah… Real head scratcher why the world isn’t crowning this guy.

He’s too small to be an every down receiver and you’d be hard pressed to find a starting WR on any other team in the league as unimpressive as a Calvin Austin. He’s the reason the Steelers were linked to every trade target receiver on the market.

He’s also on pace for 500 yards and a few TDs this year which is average #3 WR numbers or what 36 year old TE Travis Kelce has done so far through half a season. How much time do you expect national media or even local media to spend talking about a guy who wasn’t in the top 30 in receiving yards this week and isn’t one of the 60 best receivers in the league? He’s a nobody, a number 3 WR on most teams at best. This is the #1 player the team will look to upgrade over in the off-season, maybe 1A with a CB to replace old man Slay.

Why the fuck are we butt hurt about a completely non descriptive midget receiver that produces no results not getting enough attention? Not every Steelers player is great and deserving of praise. Especially this one.

Fuck this thread.

Well, if your attitude is "fuck this thread," feel free not to post on it. And like so many others on this esteemed website, you make up shit. Nobody's "butt hurt," just noting that the guy that's made some notable contributions this year, doesn't even get mentioned. CA III was missed when he was out, and productive when he plays. Go back to the games I've cited and tell me that's not true. But if you want to stick with "fuck this thread," and oh....continue to root against the team, please go right ahead.

CAIII is one helluva player and we could do a whole lot worse at WR2.

He’ll have several more big catches to win games and that’s what matters, not dumbfuck stats on a TE focused, run heavy team.

Love me some CAIII.

A “TE focused, run heavy team” that literally benched their $50,000,000 #1 TE because they they did t feel they could run the ball with him on the field.

So a back-up o lineman took his snaps. When Connor Heyward wasn’t taking them of course.

This team is dumb and highly mismanaged.
Jibba Jabber’s offense hasn’t scored more than 7 1st quarter points in 84 consecutive games. An NFL record by far. A historic amount of “easin in”. We are lucky to have him.

I like Austin, but he's nothing special. There are guys on practice squads that could put up his numbers.

...and Freiermuth had a career game and is playing more. Darnell Washington is seeing more and more targets per game and is playing like a fucking monster. Jonnu Smith is not playing well, but he's going to get more opportunities and I'm sure he'll have some big games before the season is over. I'm no lil' Heyward fan, but he's a nice Swiss Army Knife kind of player, who now is excelling at the Tush Push. Had a huge TD catch from Rodgers a few weeks ago and is a good special teamer.

Jesus Christ Spencer Anderson had a catch for a nice gain.

This team loves heavy sets. Against Cincy late in the game, Freirmuth was split out wide and made huge plays.

This team is a TE FIRST, run heavy team and no matter who they would have brought in at WR2, that isn't changing.

...and Calvin Austin made big time plays, again, vs Indy.

Overall, I can't complain much at all about the passing game. That ain't the problem. We need to run the ball better and the defense needs to play like it did vs Indy on a consistent basis.

The Chargers offensive line is in tatters and the Steelers better take advantage but, but like the front office, the very last thing I'm worried about right now is the #2 receiver.

Nobody will be dropping to their knees over CAIII ever, but as this offense is constructed, he’s an important player. Had big catches both this season and last, when Mike Williams couldn’t send him to the bench.

He’ll remain under appreciated but that’s okay. The WR2 in this offense has to make the most of the few opportunities they get each game and Calvin Austin III has done that consistently.

Exactly right, KC!! Kings of exaggeration on this site. No one's suggesting we "drop to our knees," but let's not pretend that this kid is a non-entity either. He's come up big at times, heretofore noted.

He'll keep coming up big and he'll keep being criticized even after he comes up big.

Folks weirdly pick players to hate for no reason, probably because they didn't have them in the draft contest or something.

It's weird. Mitch Trubisky who played like he was throwing games? Hate a guy like that. A solid contributor like CAIII? That hate is laughable.

i like Austin and he's been held back by shit QB play and even shittier offensive design. He's probably best as a WR3 in most offenses given some of his limitations, but...

I think the WR talent is acceptable for the this offense and how they utilize these WR's. They can't even get targets to Metcalf so the argument that tit's prudent or wise to invest massive resources into a second WR who will also struggle to get targets is ridiculous to me. Like some people wanted to trade a first for Waddle who over the course of the season might make a handful of big plays for you. Maybe he wins a game for you. But that's a first rounder this team in particular needs to try and get their future QB regardless of what Rodgers does.

On just the level of my own personal opinion, WR is a grossly overrated position. You are better off having a well rounded group of 4-5 guys who can all make plays when called upon than being top heavy. WR's also just don't win championships. A lot is made of the fungibility of RB's, but the WR position is similar. The rules are so watered down that guys who would have been decapitated 20 years ago if they went across the middle can thrive now.

There are some WR's who are worth the investment just like with RB's (and there's more of them in the league who are worth it, I'll admit), but they remain the shiny toys that fans, pundits and even some coaches just can't get enough of.

Final note - I still have faith in Roman Wilson and he's starting to make plays. Another gripe I have with this team and Tomlin, particularly since Colbert left is that they don't give a lot of these young guys a chance to learn and grow by just playing. Austin and Wilson have both been stunted by this.

He’s underused here. Soon he’ll go somewhere else, have a few decent years and a few injuries. In 8 years Tomlin will be overjoyed to have him back while singing his praises.

Not suggesting we take one necessarily, but that worked out way better than QB or DB in R1 has recently. Team has a lot of needs. You could go BPA at almost any position.

You COULD, but this team has been transparent about who their 1st round pick will be for the past 6 drafts. They go based on position of immediate need

I suppose that's QB, but you could make an argument for a few other positions, as well. Their scouts have been sighted around some of what, at least, were the top QB prospects' games, but there are a lot of other players on those teams, and the "top prospects" at QB haven't exactly set the world on fire this year.

It's going to be funny if Austin goes on to sign elsewhere with a real QB and offensive scheme that makes use of its WR's and thrives.

I'm reminded a bit of Emmanuel Sanders who blossomed after leaving here.
