Love Me Some Cooter
Colts OC Jim Bob Cooter, 41: A one-time backup quarterback at Tennessee, Cooter was just 31 when he took over as the Lions' play-caller in 2015 and instantly sparked a turnaround for Matthew Stafford and Detroit's offense. A decade later, he's an integral piece of Indianapolis' No. 1-ranked offense, even though head coach Shane Steichen calls the plays. Steichen loves Cooter because he lives in the details -- leverage, spacing, timing, intent behind each look -- that can change the entire picture. Cooter's ability to stay one step ahead has been integral to the Colts' process and is one reason other teams may be intrigued to spend more time getting to know him.

If Dunce is still in charge he will 100% hire a defensive coach.
He will need to follow the blueprint set before him. Far too chickenshit to step outside that box.

Jibba Jabber’s offense hasn’t scored more than 7 1st quarter points in 88 consecutive games. An NFL record by far. A historic amount of “easin in”. We are lucky to have him.

So, the opposite of coaching from the gut.
On the surface, there's nothing inherently wrong with a defensive coach if he's the right guy with the right vision. But the main issue is that even if you have a defensive guy without Tomlin's massive ego and micomanaging who is willing to turn over the offense to someone brilliant, you are going to end up with that coordinator hired out from under you.
There's also an elephant in the room here. The politics of the Rooney's, the Rooney rule, and the optics of them replacing the longest tenured black coach with a white guy. And it's pretty damn hard to find an offensive coach coming out of the pipeline who is black.
There's no way in hell Rooney would just set his sights on some offensive coach and get rid of Tomlin because the optics of that are what Art II fears the most. And they will get slammed with it regardless of whether it's fair because the mouthbreathers who defend Tomlin will stoop that low.
This is all theoretical, anyway. I'm still convinced Art II loves him some Mediocre Mike.

I've cited that several times on this esteemed website. There is no way that the inventors of the Rooney rule fire the black head coach… Along with getting off on NHALS in having had only three head coaches in 56 yearsCKSteeler wrote: ↑Sun Nov 30, 2025 7:17 amOn the surface, there's nothing inherently wrong with a defensive coach if he's the right guy with the right vision. It is the Rooney recipe for success.
But it was done with owners who actually knew something about football.

Replacing Coach T with a guy named Jim Bob, in western PA.
I can hear it now.

Being defense first might be a valid contrarian strategy to offensive dominance, but not the way it is being executed.
For example it worked perfectly during the Denver Manning era.
That involved team speed, youth and a young Von Miller, not aging veterans.
At this point I'd replace Tomlin with Ted Nugent just to hear the screams.

The elephant in the room is real.
It’s a shame the Patriots weren’t saddled with optics. Kraft gave Mayo one season to be a fucking dunce and canned him and hired Vrabel. Look at them now. No one is screaming “white coach replaced black coach!” (To be fair, Mayo couldn’t cry NHALS!)
I’m surprised Cool Shades didn’t hire Mayo.
This is Dan Rooney’s doing. For as much greatness he brought to the franchise when he took over from Art Sr, at the end, he set the wheels in motion for the destruction of this once great franchise. He was the architect of the Rooney Rule. He hired Tomlin. Said Tomlin “Blew them away” in the interview…. Really? After listening to this dunderhead in his pressers, we are supposed to believe Tomlin blew anyone away in an interview for HC? I call bullshit. I’m surprised Dan didn’t wear a big gold chain around his neck at the end, and a baseball cap with a straight brim and the gold stickers left intact. Word to yo’ mutha, Dan!
Russ Grimm was supposed to follow Cowher, and it was all but done. He was selecting his staff. The Tomlin selection was a last-minute surprise so old liberal Dan could have his virtue signaling, rule-namesake hire. He knew Tomlin wasn’t the best coaching candidate. He was the best minority coaching candidate. He was their Johnny Bravo. (I’m so glad Dan loved Obama so much and donated to his cause…. Donated so much he was made ambassador to Ireland…. I miss the days I didn’t know (or care) about the Rooney’s political leanings.)
To think we’ve lived for almost 2 decades with this fraud, and now we might have to live through another defensive-minded black head coach just because there aren’t many black OC’s?
I don’t care what fucking color the guy is. I want a cutting edge offensive football mind that can win in today’s NFL. If he’s black and he's the best candidate, fine. But if he’s white and he’s the best candidate, that HAS TO BE FINE, TOO. Are the Steelers interested in winning or is it now just about optics, virtue signaling and social engineering?

We had a good coach of color named Brian Flores and we let him go.
So it's not like the Steelers have a pristine record on quality black coaches.
