Tomlin to NBC

As Tirico has been sloshing his balls all winter here it comes
Report: Mike Tomlin joins NBC

In Pittsburgh, Mike Tomlin wanted volunteers, not hostages. He has now volunteered for a new assignment.

Andrew Marchand of The Athletic reports that Tomlin will join NBC’s Football Night in America.

Tomlin resigned from the Steelers after 19 seasons on the job, two Super Bowl appearances, one Super Bowl win, and never a losing record. Many will assume it’s a short-term stint in TV before a return to coaching. Time will tell whether Tomlin has made a more permanent career change.

He’ll be great on TV. He has always been a master communicator, with a long list of catchphrases — some of which seemingly were crafted in the moment. If so, that will serve him well on NBC.

Tomlin’s arrival comes at a time when the NBC pregame show is in flux. Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy will not be returning. NBC has made no announcements regarding other possible changes. (And they don’t tell me anything.)

Marchand notes in his article that yours truly “is expected” to return. I can state a little more clearly that I’ll be back for a 17th season. Unless and until I show up and my ID won’t scan. Which is something I’ve been bracing for throughout most of the first 16 seasons.

Contract stipulates that he can only do one playoff game in which he must suck.

As much as Collinsworth annoys the hell out of me, I read a story a few years back about the insane amount of time he spends preparing for games, watching film of teams and generally learning the whole league. Knowing Dungy's character, I have to believe he was consummately professional, as well. It's going to be a shock to the system for Tomlin if he tries to go in there off the top of his head, and I don't think he's going to love it, nor do I think he'll be willing to put in the type of work that top-notch TV analysts do. I imagine this experiment is going to be pretty short-lived.
Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile...

I wish him all the luck in the world. It's right in his wheelhouse especially with his brand of word salad. I'm just wondering where all the head coaching job offers were since so many told me he'd be hired in a heartbeat once he left the Steelers. As long as he never returns to the Steelers, I wish him all the best.

As a person that goes out of his way to avoid pre/post game bullshit, I could not care less. Hopefully, I never hear the fraud speak again!

When no other team hired any of his assistants it was pretty clear no other team would want him either.

TV is perfect for him.

exactly...........

none of this was off the top of his head...He spent alot of time coming up with this speakphrase style.
He will spend more time thinking up new shit, then he will watching any tape and preparing for a game.

I don't get the Collinsworth hate.

The guy has always been a spectacular overachiever and that makes him someone to admire.

Frankly I think it's all Bengal hate. If he played for any team outside the AFCN Yinzers would respect him more.

I agree on both counts. Collinsworth can be annoying but he's well prepared and good at his job. I don't believe Tomlin will be good or well prepared, and he's not a good speaker despite popular opinion.

I do not think his well developed line of bullshit is going to translate to TV.

I really don't.

Maybe because he's not doing any type of color work, but will be relegated to the pregame/halftime/postgame show it will be better?

But his well-developed line of bullshit doesn't provide any real insights.

It's fun for interviews and quick on the sidelines takes, but when you're expected to at least superficially look like you're providing substantive input on the teams or the games? Not so much.

I think he will not last long.

Although wtf do I know? Tony Romo doesn't offer much and he's still got a job.

What is the NBC pregame show about 90 minutes? They have interviews and highlights so Tomlin will need to have about 15 minutes of talking time. I know, in fact we all know he can do 15 minutes of spin at the drop of a hat. All he has to do is talk about some player he wanted to draft and the other talking heads will nod in agreement and tell us how insightful Mike T is.

IMO, Romo is one of the best in the biz. So is Collinsworth.

He's going to therapy for this. Does anyone else find this bizarre, especially if it's not couples therapy. Always deny is probably the best advise to give so.eone in this situation.

He has super annoying mannerisms and tends to fawn gratuitously over certain guys whose name rhymes with "Cojones"

That said anyone who thinks Collinsworth is the nadir should go back and watch some Paul Maguire. That guy was literally tits on a bull.

I'm waiting for the top tier play analysis

Tomlin: "I would have run it into the line, 3 times in a row, here." "It's important to put "time pressure" on your opponent."

Broadcast Co-Host: But Coach, we're early in the first quarter.

Tomlin: Time pressure starts the moment you get off the bus.
