Interesting that both Tomlin and Payton have coached 17 playoff games.Stosh-67 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 01, 2023 4:56 pmIce wrote: ↑Wed Feb 01, 2023 4:16 pmWe couldn't have at least shot them an email re: Tomlin's lack of losing seasons?
Doncs had to do something. Overspent so hard on Wilson that they were forced to overspend on Payton.
Also, the Steelers should definitely fire/force out Tomlin with a year or two left on the contract, just to see.
Mike Tomlin
16 years as head coach.
A playoff win in only 4 of those 16 years.
Six one and done playoff seasons.
No playoff wins since 2016 - six years.
Three playoff wins* in the last 12 years. One handed to us on a platter. ( Matt Moore, Alex Smith & AJ McGarron)
Lost the last four playoff games giving up 36, 45, 48 & 42 points.
Last 4 playoff games saw an average halftime deficit of 25-10.
The portfolio says we should not get, but a 4th or 5th round pick for Tomlin.
A compensatory ick, if you will.
This is the one case where we would benefit from todays media incompetence ..........
And wish for a 1st and a 2nd in return
Both won a SB.
Tomlin went to 2 SB.s ( 1-1)
Payton 1-0
For a historical perspective on where they rank,
There are 18 head coaches with more playoff wins ( 10+ ) than the both of them.
Tomlin has coached for 16 years.
Took his team to the playoffs 10 of those 16 seasons.
17 playoff games, 8-9 record.
A playoff win in only 4 of those 10 playoff years, a playoff win in only 4 of 16 years as head coach.
Six one and done playoff seasons.
His team has given up 30 or more points in 7 of the 17 games.
His team has scored 30 or more points in 5 of the 17 games.
His teams have scored less than 20 points in 5 of 17 games ( that was also a 5 game stretch with less than 20 )
Tomlin is 3-8 in his last 11 playoff games. ( 5-8 since winning the SB )
Payton has coached for 15 years.
Took his team to the playoffs 9 of those 15 seasons.
17 playoff games, 9-8 record.
A playoff win in 7 of those 9 playoff years, a playoff win in 7 of 15 years as head coach.
Only two one and done playoff seasons.
His team has given up 30 or more points in 4 of the 17 games.
His team has scored 30 or more points in 7 of the 17 games
In Payton's last 10 playoff games, his team has given up 30 or more just once ( 30 to the Rams in his last playoff game )
His teams have scored less than 20 points in only 2 of 17 playoff games.
Payton is 5-7 in his last 12 playoff games, including 2 OT losses. ( 5-7 since winning the SB )
Both won a SB.
Just figured I'd throw some playoff comparisons out there.
Tomlin took over an 8-8 team a year removed from a SB win.
You know the players he had on both sides of the ball from the previous 8-8 year ( Tomlins last )
Payton took over a team that had not made the playoffs for 5 straight years and had a record of 3-13 the year before he took over.
He took over a team from Haslett that had Aaron Brooks and Todd Bauman at QB
Antowain Smith and Aaron Stecker led the team in rushing, Deuce McAllister played in only 5 games.
A receiving core of Dante' Stallworth, Joe Horn, Aaron Stecker, Zachary Hilton, Az-Zahir Hakim. Two guys with more than 35 catches
A defense that had one guy with more than 4 sacks.
Leading tacklers were guys that went by the names....Colby Bockwoldt, Fred Thomas, Dwight Smith and Josh Bullocks.
While other notable defensive players that were at the top of the stats sheet went by the names...Will Smith, Charles Grant, Mike McKenzie, Jason Craft, Courtney Watson, Darren Howard, Willie Whitehead.
